Boat anchor is right. I bought one for my son so he could play bass in his high school Jazz Band many years ago. It was well made, had a good neck and good sound. It was used and I got a good price on it. Of course, they weren't that much new back then (1989 or so). I told him recently that I was seeing used ones now for $600 and more, and asked him if he remembered it. He said, "I remember it was really heavy!"
there's a walnut one on SF Bay Area CL right now. looks good, asking $1200. doubt they'll get it.
a friend of mine was playing in a band for el cerrito high school reunion and in walks Creedence - sans Fogarty, of course. no instruments & a couple of sheets to the wind according to my buddy. they asked if it was okay if they played some songs. " well, uh, no problem! " Stu looked at all the knobs on my friend's T40. " um, just make it sound like a P bass. "

My very first bass was a 1979 T-40 in black. The bass by itself is not that heavy. It's the hardware that made it heavy. But those basses are built like tanks!
I just love the looks of them, on top of all the tonal possibilities. But the clincher for me is that they're an iconic piece of American music history. Simply put... a BAdaSS bass!

This was just a few years ago. Definitely not pristine, but With the original case. Someone pulled the frets out, but that was a bonus for me.

Wow, this is a REFRESHING thread ! I was not expecting to see a Peavey, I figured it would be a 7ender like usual. That bass would make me GASSY, too !!!!! PEAVEY USA RULES !!!
Good luck ! I JUST saw one sell for about $600 on GC Used, which in the last year they've been getting double that. I miss the days of $350 T-40's all day long.

It's still fretless. Whatever they filled it with shrunk slightly, so after I lowered the action it buzzes a little when you're right on the line. There's a guitar shop around the corner that said they could redo it for a reasonable price. It would be nice to have it filled with something light that matched the maple, almost unlined.
Yeah, I think I may have seen the $600 one. I've only been playing bass 3-4 years and have 5 basses already and a really nice rig, so unfortunately, I may have to wait a while before I do some serious T-40 hunting.
