Gallien Krueger Head with Non-GK Cabs????

I know there are several threads about gallien krueger heads combined with avatar cabs. I'm looking to get a 1001RB with an 8 ohm Avatar 410 neo and hope to add Avatar 212 neo down the road.

I am confused and need help. i've scanned many of the threads for the answers, and nothing is clear...

RE: Horn/Tweer & Bi-amp function: :help:
For pairing GK heads, with non-GK cabs, does it mean that the tweeter on a non-GK cab is useless with a GK head????

RE: Stacking Mulitiple Cabs:help:
also, i'm under the impression that you CANT stack mulitiple non-GK cabs with GK heads - is this true?

this is pretty much the reason why i've preferred big combos, i hate this technical stuff:mad:

No, it will function in full range mode. That means the crossover in the cab will take care of addressing appropriate frequencies and power to the tweeter.

No, you can stack cabs. They will work in full range.

+1.

I pair my older GK 2000RB with an Avatar 4x10 and Avatar 2x12, and everything works great. If you bridge it, you have to get/make a special bridge cable. Search the posts for the specifics on this type of cable.

i just today played that head in a store on a decent cabinet and did not like it one bit, get yourself a MarkBass Little Mark II

Not sure exactly how that statement helps or relates to the OP's question. If you spend anytime at all on this forum you will soon see that the GK 1001 is a pretty popular head. Whether it meets your approval or not.

Exactly. Brutal bassist is just being a bit childish. Or perhaps he meant it as a joke and forgot the smiley. The GK is highly thought of as is Markbass, Genz Benz and many other amps. GK has also been around for a long time.

In answer to the OP--the GK heads will work just fine with other brands of cabinets using a normal speaker cable. The tweeter will work just as it should assuming the cabinet has a tweeter. It just won't be driven by the separate 50 watt power amp used in the 700, 1001, and 2001. It'll be driven the way other companies do it-from a crossover in the cabinet that separates the treble from the bass and sends each to their appropriate speaker. There's no technical wizardy for you to figure out. Even a guitar player could hook it up. :)

So ignore all the rumours you're hearing from people who don't know what they're talking about.

A lot of guys love the GK head with the Avatar 4x10 Neo cabinets. Even more like the Avatar 2x12 cabinets.

I've used GK for many years live, in the studio and at home and for all kinds of music and gig situations. I've usually used GK heads with other brands of speaker cabinets. I've never been disappointed. They're great amps.

This is exactly why If I were king of Talkbass I would require some kind of public profile. Like many here, my age, gear, experience, etc is there for all to see. It helps a great deal when you get a response and are left scratching your head. Click on Brutal's profile and right away you have a context-- 16 yrs old. Nothing wrong with being sixteen, we all have to be there at some time. When I was at that point in age and career, nobody was asking for my opinion on high level bass gear. I shudder to think what I might have said :p

JKT

I just thought I clear up something which hasn't been specifically said.

As you might know (or not), your GK head has two amps. The main amp and a smaller 50W amp which is only used to drive tweeters. Now, when using GK cabs and a GK speakon cable with your GK head, you can separetely control the volume of your main driver/s independently of the volume of your tweeter. This is called bi-amping essentially because you'd be using two amplifiers.

You could also use the same GK amp and Cabinets in full range, meaning that you would not use the bi-amp feature above mentioned and instead the internal crossover in the cabinet would determine how much goes to the tweeter (a bit simplistic, but that's the principle).

Now, just as you may go full range with GK heads and GK cabinets, you can similarly go full range with GK heads paired with other cabinets. The one thing you cannot do (without modifications to the cabs) is to use the bi-amp feature with non-GK cabs
Hope this helps
