I don't believe the modification Mr. Gallien was talking about had anything to do with trimming off low end, but actually a relative boosting of the mids and highs to emulate the presence feature when set at zero on the 700/1001.
He mentioned earlier in this thread that there isn't actually any more low end coming from the MB2-500, but rather slightly less mids and highs. This gives the illusion that there is more bass.
So you all don't have to go searching for it:
So he's not talking about anything more than resetting the zero point or 12:00 positions on a few knobs. IMHO, if you can get this with a simple turn of a know, I don't see any point in sending it in.
Some thought on the "String Bass" button from the 700/1001 amps and the MB2-500. Just above, Mr. Gallien said: I know that in the manual the specs list "String Bass Button +11db@20Hz", but my guess is that Mr. G is hinting at something a little different. I'm thinking that with the button set to "4-string" you actually get -11db@20Hz and with the button engaged (set to 5-string) that sub bass cut is removed allowing more of the extended range to come through. Most cabs are going to sound tighter in the low end with a cut at 20Hz because the drivers aren't hitting their excursion limits and don't have to handle as much power. I some instances though (recording, huge rig, dub, etc.), you might want this sub bass coming thorough. I'm also guessing the GK doesn't want to advertise this feature as a 20Hz cut since a lot of knucklehead bass players who don't know any better would consider that a bad thing.
I haven't heard Mr. Gallien comment on how the MB2-500 handles information around 20Hz, or how the MB2-500 was voiced in relation to the String Button on the 700/1001. Is it more similar to 5-string setting, or the 4-string setting? Is it somewhere in between? Only he knows for sure. I think this would clear up a lot of the confusion were hearing about the low end on this amp.
