"Gangnam Style" - Anyone Playing It?

Closing the loop on this... turns out we never tried to play it on the gig.

The crowd was lame so none of us felt like going out on a limb. Kept the show pretty much straight down the middle with our established material, got paid, went home.

Thanks for the advice and links though.

The "buzz" of Gangam style is twofold: One, it's incredibly catchy, and "exotic" because it's from a market most people don't know about in the West. Two, it's got a subtle hint of satire under the silliness, making fun of people who try to look like they're rich and put on airs. "Gangam" is a rich district in Seoul.

I just volunteered to memorize at least one verse for the office Christmas party - doing 5 other songs with some people from work. I might as well learn the whole song and talk my "real" bands into doing it also. So, I'm not playing it yet, but will be taking a crack at it soon.

Joking aside, there are always ways to take a $hite song and make it your own. For example:

If you can rock out with it a bit, slightly tongue-in-cheek, the audience will probably love it. Half of them are probably sick of hearing the original, so hopefully they'll be in on the joke with you; the other half will enjoy hearing it AGAIN.

In defence of Gangnam Style: I don't normally have much time for crap electro-pop-dance music (regardless of how many gorgeous Korean girls you can cram into the video), but listen to this arrangement:

Now, they may have added a few embellishments on the arrangement, but if you listen to it, you can hear a song that's actually been quite well assembled! I don't know how many other recent chart hits this could said for.

I strongly disagree that "make it your own" and "rock out with it" are good approaches to playing this kind of music. They amount to taking a modern popular song and making it sound like an old-fashioned unpopular song instead. I look at "your own" versions as an easy way out and an occasionally necessary evil at best.

Maybe that's how you would do it ... but there are plenty of songs that I've enjoys covers of much more than the original.
