"Gangnam Style" - Anyone Playing It?

I've been asked to perform acoustically for my cousin's reception. I'm thinking of covering 'Gangnam Style', along with 'My Way'.

We ended up dropping "Gangnam Style" from the office Christmas party setlist cause the girls didn't like how the pianist was playing it, and the refrain wasn't easy for them to sing either. Too bad. I guess I'll have to get one of my other bands to do it. But instead for the Christmas party we are doing this:

Ended up unexpectedly rehearsing it tonight with my Latin band, we'll do it at Thursday's gig. Lyrics will be pretty much butchered by our Brazilian singer. Hope we get it on video.

It was sloppy, the guy doing the vocals didn't really have the lyrics anywhere near memorized and just BSed his way through thinking no one would notice, but still got the biggest applause of the night.

So, definitely worth learning.

First off... I totally don't get the "buzz" behind this song.

But anyway. My BL wants us to play this on a wedding gig tomorrow night. We don't have the instrumentation or effects to do it (we don't even have a keyboard) but he thinks we can still pull it off. I think I've copped the bass line (such as it is) but don't know what else a 2-guitar, bass and drums band can do to get anywhere close to the recorded version. Thoughts or suggestions?

BTW we are also going to play "Call Me Maybe" (first time) on the same gig. I tried to talk my BL into just playing these two songs as break music but he wants us to give them a go live. So I guess my degradation from semi-legit semi-pro musician to shameless pop whore is complete.

Do you pay your bills and put food on the table as a bass player? If so, then you gotta do what you gotta do. If not, then I would tell the BL to bite me and he can play that garbage if he wants to.

I dont understand ever playing something that makes me feel that awful. You had it right, the word is whore.

I disagree with this in some applications.

If you are a "Rock" band and folks come out to see/hear a Rock band, it does help, more than hurt the song.

I strongly disagree that "make it your own" and "rock out with it" are good approaches to playing this kind of music. They amount to taking a modern popular song and making it sound like an old-fashioned unpopular song instead. I look at "your own" versions as an easy way out and an occasionally necessary evil at best.
