gas prices

Gonna shoot for 50mpg's. I think I can get it if I stay under 55mph. Sure, it'll piss a few people off, but I will probably get one of those LED signs for the back window that you program to say different things, and put "I drive slower to increase my mpgs...currently getting over 45 mpg! How many gallons per mile are YOU getting?" :D
 
The car companies have had about enough. None of them are making any money. Gas-electric hybrids are not the way to go. I just read today Nissan is going to bypass that technology. I predict that in the next few years most of us will be driving full blown electrics, probably the kind that you'll have to charge up at home. Something commuters can use. The hydrogen fuel cell electrics won't take off until the stations are in place all over the country. You'll still need a gas powered car to take long road trips for awhile. Either the oil companies will start producing hydrogen and building hydrogen fueling stations or drastically drop the gas prices to compete with the electric cars.

Plug-in hybrids and fully electric cars are fine for those who have the use of a garage or driveway, but for those who have to park their cars on the street (eg, city or apartment dwellers, or those with smaller houses), this type of technology gives them no facilities to recharge their cars. It's a great start, but it's imperfect as it's far from being a universal solution. Once you can fully recharge a battery pack in less than 5 minutes at a charging station (in the same way you use a gas/petrol station), then this problem will be able to be mitigated.
 
They seem to get by alright in Europe, and they pay more for gas then we do. Americans need to stop whining and start changing their driving habits.

Do you have any suggestions as to how people are supposed to get to work, school, gigs, etc? I don't know about Detroit, but in the Austin area, public transit is, at its very best, unwieldy. An expensive, mostly-useless joke. If you are in an outlying area, and you need to go *anywhere* besides downtown, you're going to need the whole danged day to get there on the bus/train system. Capitol Metro must believe that we allllll work downtown. Silly rabbits.

Don't tell me "live close to work", either. Most people can't afford to live in the central city.

Even when we lived in Leander proper, the grocery stores were too far away for walking or riding a bike, and how would I get the groceries home then? Now that we live in Sandy Creek, outside of town, we can walk to the local convenience store, but that's it. The grocery is still ten miles away.

The fact is that, in America, most towns were planned in the age of cheap cars and cheaper gas, and do not have public transit systems, or centers of business/education/shopping in every neighborhood. And most towns cannot now afford to put such infrastructure in place.

So...change our driving habits? How? We can plan errands and shopping in the same trip, but that's about it. I can't even do that. I can't be gone from home more than two hours at a time, during the day, because my Mom must be gotten up from her chair or bed, fed, and repositioned every two hours, minimum. There's no going out and getting everything done in one day for me, or for other people trapped at home caring for small kids or elderly people.

Gas is $3.70 a gallon at our little local store. I have (had, actually) rich girlfriends 20 minutes up the road...old bandmates. They can't be bothered to pick up a phone and *plan* anything...they just expect me to show up at the lake or what-not and hang with them. But, at $3.70/gallon, I'm not about to go chasing rich people around trying to find them. So...we don't hang out anymore. They don't like to come over here to TrailerVille, and I can't afford to go run around here and there in their big Yukons and Explorers with them.

Basically, I don't hang very often with people more than a ten-minute drive away. I visit online or by phone, but I don't drive to see them unless for a special visit. All my friends either are in the neighborhood, or they hang at the ice house down the road. I've restricted myself socially a *lot* because of gas prices.

About the newer cars...Why do they have to be sooooooo FUGLY? And why do they have to sound like George Jetson's car? I hate that they are soooo quiet. You can't even tell they are running! No roar of the engine. Very practical, very safe, and DEADLY BORING!!! And dead-ugly to boot.

I mean...yeah, I know, I can kiss my muscle-car roaring motors goodbye. That's why I want a Harley. At least *they* make a beautiful noise!!! But if I must someday buy an electric or a hybrid or whatever, all quiet and wimpy and frakkin' boring, can't we at least make some that *look* good? Today's affordable vehicles look like boxes that have been squished out of shape. Ugly, Ugly, FUGLY!!!

Sure it's got bugs, but it will happen. You'll see people running extension cords out of windows to charge their cars in the street or they'll charge them at work or grandma's house. They'll probably be some fights, but folks will find solutions. The five minute fuel up time is what the hydrogen fuel cell is all about. When the stations are built the aftermarket companies will pop up and start making kits to turn your old battery pack powered car into a hydron-cell.
 
The key is to either:

a) get a job close to home

b) get a home close to the job.

Right now I drive 40 km round trip and spending $20 a week on gas in my small toyota. Thats still waay to much for me as I am used to spending $10 a month to drive my scooter/vespa. As soon as this term is over I am going to get a job where I dont have to get on the highway. This way I can drive my scooter/vespa or my bicycle. Cycling is what I really want to do.

Yeah, its just a shame N. American cities are designed the way they are. the Europeans are much more advanced in this way.

When I bought my condo two years ago I purposely bought in an area where everything is close by. Light Rail Transit is a 5 min. walk. Large university (SFU) is 10 minute bus ride for my son when he gets older. Large mall and grocery stores are about a 10 minute walk. Basically everything is close. The trade-off is that I am living in an urban environment and many prefer rural which I understand. I guess its just going to cost more to live in a rural area... at least for transportation.

Again my ideal is cycling to work. I want to get a job in the local school district so I could cycle no more than 18km across the district. I cycled 17km each way in University and was better off for it physically than I am now. It gets a little cold in the winter but with the right clothing, its bearable. After 5 minutes the sweat starts and you're not cold anymore anyway. Ah, memories...

And don't forget, with urban areas comes more crime...and not to mention that they are trying to take our guns, and have succeeded in many areas. How are we supposed to protect ourselves? Call the cops? I don't think so, folks.

Never did me any harm. In fact it did me a hell of a lot of good! My gf used to live 2 miles away, and I would walk it regularly. She now lives 1.5 miles away, which is nicer I guess, but it is all uphill to get there...

i hate when people say stuff like this. the big 3 oil companies sell to all the gas stations. FREDS CORNER SHOP does not have their own refinery folks. everyone gets their oil from the sam big 3 companies. stop buying gas altogether is about the only answer i see.

Not true at all. There are a lot more than 3 oil production companies and not all oil companies have refineries (Walter oil and gas, Anadarko and whole bunch of other independant oil companies). There are many refinery/distrbution companies (Valero for one)that do not drill or produce crude oil.

Please get your facts straight.
 
Why not? A mile is nothing. When I was at school, I walked slightly more than a mile there, and the same back every day. Even at primary school. 2 miles a day, 5 days a week for 14 years. Never did me any harm. In fact it did me a hell of a lot of good! My gf used to live 2 miles away, and I would walk it regularly. She now lives 1.5 miles away, which is nicer I guess, but it is all uphill to get there...

When I was a kid, we had to walk 23 miles in the snow, barefoot, to get to school...uphill both ways. And we LIKED IT! :hiding:

I just heard about this place on Sunday. Any truth to this being the largest pocket of oil currently known about on the planet, and there's enough oil up there to last 200 years, and if they started piping the stuff down here gas would go back to $1.50/gallon?

I've also heard that. There's a story about it here.
I don'tknow how true it is but it doesn't surprise me.

That will never happen. However, the solution is extremely simple.

Have a removable battery pack which is a consistent size and interface across the auto industry. Hand in your empty one and pick up a fully charged one. The existing gas station infrastructure can be utilized - get rid of the pumps and put in storage facilities for batteries instead. The service station then hooks the battery up for recharging (most likely at night). You only pay for the battery that comes with your car, then switch it out. The car has an optional plug-in charge connection for people who can use their home electricity.

The current system for propane tank distribution (for RVs, gas grilles) is an almost perfect model of this kind of distribution system, though on a smaller scale.
