Gay Musicians

It strikes me that there are quite a few straight men in this thread who take this for granted. You all mention how cosmopolitan you are and how you simply don't associate individuals with their sexual preference -- congratulations.

Do you think you might perhaps feel differently if every one of the people you met in the music scene were gay? If you were, by all accounts, the only representative of your sexual preference?

I appreciate that we, as musicians, tend to think of ourselves as open minded. It is not, however, very open minded to imply that a gay man was a bigot for wanting to find individuals who shared his viewpoint on the world.

I'm straight, but I feel good about the fact that there's a gay thread on TB without homophobes descending en masse! As a society, maybe we really are heading toward a point where diverse ways of being a human being can co-exist - and inter-mingle - comfortably.
Oops, hope that doesn't sound corny (it probably does!); but I'm an older guy and I really do feel gratified about the openness of the gay community, compared to when I was young.

Hey, a question for the older gay folks: Have you noticed a pronounced increase in the acceptance factor in general society, over the last couple of decades? Or do you still run into just as many homophobes?

I'd expect that one answer to this question could be found in the old adage: "when money talks, people listen".

The gradual - and conditional - acceptance of many minorities by the majority appears to have historically followed this track.

Don't get your panties all bunched up. No one but you is calling anyone names.

And to entertain your question, that sounds like a dream come true. So all the chicks that might have gone for the singer or guitar player can now get in line behind the chicks that dig bassists. :D

Nah! I never get laid as a result of playing anyway, so I don't think it would make much difference either way. I'm not having sex with just as many men I meet at gigs as women. (My wife's kinda funny about that.....)

Huh huh huh.... You said Fallacy!!

I'm not gay, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't make out with Tbird1958.......... :hiding:

Alex! You're crackin' me up!

Hey folks. I'm a newly registered member here. Got a question I've been thinking about for a while.

Are you openly gay?

I am, and I find it kinda lonely. I've been out for several years, ever since I went to college. But I dont' seem to meet many other gay musicians. Queer musicians I have met seem mostly to be involved with the dance scene in some fashion, either as DJs (Yes, I consider them musicians), or the punk/rock scene. Oh, and singer/songwriters, too. But I don't think I've ever met another openly gay bassist or drummer, and certainly no one who is interested in funk or jazz, as I am.

So I'm just curious to know if there's anyone else out there like me. What's your local queer music scene like? Any queerly musical communities around your area? Lookin' for some solidarity, here! :bassist:

Alex

I have no problem stating that I'm openly Bi. ............
I live in Seattle as well, it's pretty laid back here and I think most folks just have a live and let live attitude about sexuality. I'm out dressed in drag publicly several times a week.......Nobody really cares too much around here, I'm a native - it's just the way it is in Seattle.

PM me if you like :)

Whom am I calling names?

I think we're being unfair to this guy. He's looking for some like-minded souls, and we're trying to make him feel as if that's a bad idea. How is that open minded?

You said that we're implying that he was a bigot. No one was implying anything of the sort, some of us are implying that maybe he's putting too much worth into his sexuality as part of his identity, especially as a musician. You said it 'like-minded souls'. It is of my opinion that the people around us are like minded because of many other things before our sexual orientation.

My gay friends are so much more than just gay.

Lemme see now... Good spelling, good grammar, open spaced paragraphs, good articulation, love of music... Yup!

Welcome to TalkBass Alex! :)

Hehe, I do what I can.

BTW. If you're lonely then it's likely because of this:

"DJs (Yes, I consider them musicians)" :hiding: :D

Man on man, I've DEFINITELY been in arguments about this before. :D I just gotta live and let live.

Thanks for the kind words!
Alex

That's well and good, but I can understand how in certain circumstances (i.e. loneliness) someone might disagree. I don't see the motivation to change his mind, is all. Live and let live.

Well, we're just trying to help too. We're not trying change his mind, but more or less open his mind to other possibilities for his loneliness than the mere fact that he's a gay musician. What's wrong with that? :eyebrow:
