Geddy Lee Sansamp Pedal!

Thanks. Hmmm I need to choose one. Although the yyz might get me a slightly more desirable tone, the x7 might be the way to go due to versatility. I am after a nice sounding medium gain high-middy od with punch and grind but not too "metally" sounding, which I know the x7 is renowned for. im hoping I can de-metal the x7 a bit. Or I just go yyz which is more likely to match the tone im after. Might wait for more reviews.
I was literally comparing the yyz and x7 tonight at reheasal! I was surprised at how similar I could both to sound. From what you describe I think the yyz may give you the sound you want with less fiddling. If you go X7 try running at 12/18 volts. This gives more headroom and room to dial in low / mid gain tones before going all metal.

Both can sound awesome ! Not sure if both win spots on my board yet have to keep experimenting. One of them for sure and they’re both awesome sounding versatile pedals.

The X7 has a speaker sim-like lowpass filter on the DI output btw (as does the Tech21 DP3X), so any signal you send to the desk might be less bright than what you're hearing out of the main jack. Then you'd just need to tame the high end by rolling off the tweeter control if you have one.

Ultimately you can read tons of reviews but you won't know which one is the best choice for your band/song/bass/amp/cab/playing style until you put it through it's paces! Trying them all out is an expensive proposition of course, but if you use a store with a good return policy and look after the gear, one option is to bang both on a credit card then return the losers!

If you're comparing those though, you might also want to look into the DP3X.

The DP3X is definitely too big. Ive had an X before, but i couldn't really get anything I loved out of it, but i believe the extra controls on the x7 would improve it tenfold. I did have a b7k in thin grunt mode that I put after my light tubey od which created a pretty good version of what I'm after, but ive decided I want to get it with a single pedal to try and simplify things a bit. 1 role for each pedal also keeps me from having to sacrifice little things for one tone to help make another one better. I've also tried a vmt but still had that baked in tone that I didnt love. Closest ive got to what I'm after is a vt bass with high character. Here's what im working with, but b7k is gone.

If you haven't seen one in person, the DP3X is a LOT smaller than the pics might lead you to believe. It's about the same width as your Polytune, but 1.5x the length - and since it has a tuner, that's one pedal you'll be able to eliminate!

VT with high character is close to the clank of the DP3X, or indeed the YYZ with the mids boosted (the mid control is before the clipping, and the VT's character control is essentially a pre-dirt mid EQ).

Trying to settle on a signal chain and see who makes the cut and who doesn’t before I throw everything back on a pedalboard for next weekend’s show. Trying to see if I can justify 3 drive pedals. The problem is I tend to like 2 of them stacked on most of the time & then either a 3rd for different sound or stacked on top for over the top !

Current digging the YYZ always on set pretty clean only a slight grit. Alpha Omega set low/med next usually on for main hard rock tone & the X7 for over the top or something different either before yyz or after Alpha or in FX loop of HX haven’t decided.

Sometimes you just gotta go full-on, mad scientist mode to see what works and what don't. Best of luck!

Mine is in and I finally got the time to put it through it's paces... I like. The lows aren't quite as thick and warm as my Two Notes Le Bass, but it's much easier to use and easier to work out a good sounding midrange bump. I think it's going to replace the Le Bass as my preamp. The lack of an XLR direct out would have been an issue, but I picked up a Broughton HPF + DI and that handles that.

It also plays differently with my dirt pedals, which I love since it means more playing around finding what works and what doesn't. :D So far, particularly notable winners are my Crowella Animated and my Fuzzrocious Cat Tail/Grey Stache dual pedal. It LIKES them. ^^

I agree there’s a throaty midrange thing the YYZ does that’s fantastic both on its own & with other dirt

For what it’s worth......
On its own I would agree with you.
But in the mix it sounds killer imo.
I agree. I wasn’t sure at home, but at the gig it was a different story. Kept the bottom and added a little grit. I didn’t have it set very aggressively as I don’t want that sound. For me I’m wondering if I want/need it at such a subtle level. I used it about 1/2 the time. I’ll try it a few more times and see.

If you decide it’s not for you, I might know someone who’ll take it off your hands....

I’ll keep that in mind...
I am in the midst of deciding if I should stay wireless as well. So far, no stage we’ve played has been worth it. I mean, it’s nice to not have a cable dragging behind you even if you done move a lot, but keeping batteries charged and all that...and my drummer misses me if I wander off too far so I may just go back to my simple cable.

I love my wireless. I use a Boss WL-50. The transmitter plugs directly into the output jack, is charged by USB and makes guitar changes a breeze
