Geddy Lee Sansamp Pedal!

Ooohhhh! It's good! Just checked it out for a very short bit at home at low volumes and it sounds killer! Now I have to wait a week and a half for the next show...

I got a YYZ and am really enjoying it, but have a question *because* I like it so much!

Is there a similar pedal pre/di that would give just a touch of this sort of clank as an always on tone? I love using the YYZ as an OD, but when I turn it off I'm missing some, i dunno, bite in the clean, like suddenly it's kind of dead. Boo.
I have an M80 but that isn't doing it even with a hint of its own drive channel in the mix; I'm thinking perhaps a BDDI (maybe even a V1), or a VTDI? Most of the pres I can think of that you can edge into drive territory are round and tubey, but I have other options for that sound.

Because I'm using it as an obvious OD and not as a base tone - I just think I'd enjoy a little bit of it to stick around as part of my base 'clean' sound though.
I totally get what your saying. I leave mine on all the time set for a slight grit / responds to how hard I dig in sound. For more overdrive I add different pedals before or after the yyz. I’ve had good luck both ways.

I’d say the Sansamp BDDI has some similarities since that’s part of the original DNA of the sound the YYZ is based on and the B7k or B3k can get similar clank and gritt to yyz but not identical.

In your case 1 option you could just get a 2nd YYz , they’re not that $$ , although hard to find in stock it would seem. Or I’d try a mild OD or even a clean boost in front of yyz. You set it to your milder setting and then boost to drive it harder with same overall vibe to the tone

Another vote for a BDDI. I used to use a BDDI quite a bit years ago and just picked up another precisely to hear how it would interact with my YYZ. It does not disappoint. Kinda forgot how much I liked the BDDI tone and kicking the YYZ into it brings that extra layer of bite that was always missing for me.

A 2nd YYZ would be fun but I'd be looking for a pre with a DI because I have deluded myself into thinking I'll be gigging again before too long (I tell myself that every year that goes by gigless).

I just remembered the B7k and how I liked the dirt in the B7KU I had, so that's going on the list with the BDDI and VTDI as well.

I agree with the other guys. Most combinations with YYZ lead to good results! I'd found running the clean side of the B7KU into the YYZ and then just kicking on the B7KU's Drive worked great... Now, its the Silver Deluxe > YYZ > Smoothie. The YYZ is "always on" and all I have to do is kick on the Class A boost for OD. The SD helps with the cleanly buttery-ness and when boosted the SD adds nice overtones to the YYZ's OD... At this point, I do think I need a YYZ Deluxe

Funny enough I'm rocking a YYZ but I've only listened to Rush a few times...really unfamiliar with their sounds :woot:

Back when I was heavy into Tool, I got my Ric and Mesa Bass 400 amp based on Paul D’Amour’s awesome Undertow tones.

I loved that yellow signature edition Ric he played.
“I guess I’ll have to check out this Chris Squire dudes band..nice bass.”

I went Close to the Edge, fell in, and later said Farewell and explored both Hemispheres of Rush and Yes’ sound in the 70’s after that.

Yesterday I was able to make my Ashdown Hyperdrive sound 99% like the YYZ, so for those wanting to be baller on a budget, there you go (drive freq at 3:00, drive gain max, Q switch on [down], +10 switch off [up], mix at about 11:00 - or put the +10 on and back the gain off to about 2:00 if you want the drive to be more present, but too much gain with +10 on makes it fizzy instead of crunchy). With a P it sounded almost identical, with my Tbird's humbuckers the difference is greater.

Anyhow, what jumps out at me about the difference between the two pedals is that clean-side filtering. The Hyperdrive just gives you your clean tone along with the OD, but the YYZ of course has its clean filtered for more depth and separation - not to dUg levels, but definitely noticeable.

Has T21 posted what the EQ curve is? Is it stupid to run the YYZ into an amp with, in my case, the Contour switch on but the low and high mids dialed back in to taste?

Going to gig mine 2 more times and then decide if it’s going to be permanent or not. I use it very subtly on about 33-40% of the tunes we do so I’m not sure if it’s worth it to have or not.

Likewise with my wireless stuff. We don’t play many big stages and my drummer likes me close. Going to decide that this weekend as well.

meh, keep it all...if you sell it, you'll just waste the money on beer and then pee it out.
