Geddy Lee Sansamp Pedal!

I've used this pedal on one gig with my MM Sterling 4H (BEAD). I usually use a Tech 21 Para Driver DI; so I put both on my board to compare thru the PA (small club w/subs). The Geddy pedal made the low end less full, BUT sat in the mix better than the Para, the Geddy got rid of muddyness; it sounded like a taylored bass tone that sat in the full band mix very well. I admit, I still like the fullness of the Para Drive when alone; but in the mix the Geddy pedal sound best, so I used it. I went out on the other side of the stage to check it when playing a full band song and really liked it. I used a Duncan Studio Compressor before the Geddy pedal with level slightly lower than the bass guitar to hit the Geddy with touch less signal.
Next gig I used a, Fender P-bass build with Jazz neck and single EMG Geezer P, passive (tuned BEAD), used the compressor after the Geddy pedal on this one.
I noticed when using the Geddy pedal we didn't have to make much EQ adjustment on the PA channel. I also think the Geddy pedal works better on the passive bass. May not be a tone you want in the studio, but live it really is easy to EQ a good sound.

I'll agree that it works best with my passive basses. The two I've used it with in an always-on situation are my Rickenbacker 4003w and my vintage SD Curlee bass. If anything, it gives them a very nice, almost cab sim like tone. In fact, I don't even put it on my board when the actives are being played. If I want an overdriven tone with those basses I'll reach for the Darkglass AlphaOmega or a Cog Effects Mini 66.

YYZ pedal plus low-B string equals? For those of you who play 5-string, 6-string, or BEAD (you get the point), what do you get from your B?

Thanks,
John

It's stellar with a low B if you have the tight switch engaged. This cuts the bass going to the overdrive channel, which you then compensate for via the Deep/Drive blend knob and the Bass EQ knob.

If pounding away on a low B, it sounds so much more clearer and defined than a standard VT Bass or BDDI, which can both sound a bit 'blurry' in the low freqs.

I still need to get a YYZ, but I can say at least half of your comment definitely resonates with recent experiences I have had with my VTBassDI. I love the VT Bass for it's Ampeggy Ampeyness. But always felt the low end to be a bit muddy and flubby when I boost the bass EQ. But I engaged the "bite" switch on the VTBass the other day, and I felt that it helped tighten the low end up a lot. Maybe there is a similar concept operating behind the two buttons of the different products. Like a high pass filter or something. (Or is it the low pass filter that cuts low end? I always get the two confused). My only issue with the "bite" switch of the VTDI is that it adds such a nasty, sizzly high end to the signal, which is why I never used it before. Kind of like engaging the "Ultra Lo and Ultra Hi" of an Ampeg amp. But if I dial the treble way down to like 9:00 and boost the bass to about 3:00, it sounds great. This makes me all the more excited to get a YYZ. Hopefully sooner rather than later. Early Black Friday sale, anyone?

i believe it's an impedance issue rather than an output one, since my (passive) hofners have more output than my stingray.

It wouldn't be an impedance issue. The impedance of the pedal is the same as most amps. 1megOhm. For the most part you can pretty much plug a low impedance pickup into any high impedance input. The exception would be a germanium type fuzz tone or treble booster where the circuit needs a high Z pickup to work best. It could just be that you don't like the sound of the pedal with that particular bass or haven't hit upon a setting that works well with it.

I've been playing with this pedal for the last couple of days and I'm loving it. It does exactly what I was expecting it to do: a super tight bass drive that adds presence and punch to your tone.
I don't find it to be a one trick pony, as someone mentioned here before. It has so many sounds on it and the way that the deep and the drive parts interact allows to use a tight sound and maintain the low end as well.
I haven't tried it in a band set yet but from my experience this will cut through the mix like butter.
My band is planning to redefine the setlist for next year's season and we'll be playing some Faith No More tunes and this pedals is perfect to get that tight Billy Gould drive.
I think this one will move to my main board soon and stay there for some time...

I could see that but not the whole SVT thing being remniscent of Billy Gould(his tone was the opposite of Ampeg). I'll probably wind up with this pedal eventually. I don't see it taking my Alpha-Omega off my board for Gould-like grunt.
That pedal nails that midrange grunt for me.

But maybe they would sound good together, like a few TB'ers have said.

Instead of the AO doesn't Gould use the B7K and currently the MT900?! I used the b7ku stacked into an Aguilar TH in the past for Gould tone. Now I like the YYZ and technique for FNM

I've got an AlphaOmega and the YYZ at home atm. I'm recording the demo for the YYZ today and was planning on doing a comparison between both pedals, too

I’m not sure if he currently uses that but my experience in getting his grunt - the Alpha-Omega and Oxford(or AO and X) have come the closest, bar none.

I have gotten good tones using my B3K I had(and esp the B3K+VMT) I just think the Alpha-Omega and Oxford or AO+X beats them by a mile.

And I know I said I use two, but the Aloha Omega by itself is where I heard that tone. Like the time I first got my Oxford.

(The B3K has the top end, as does the X. But I’m talking about the core of his clanky tone. Or the “grunt” of it.)

I’ll have my own YYZ soon enough. Pulled the trigger on one a day ago.

I bet the YYZ will sound awesome with my Alpha Omega. Here is the X with the AO and some really old strings. I actually turned down the high end a bit post production to make it fit better. Two overdrives always seem to work better for me than one.

@Zon master here was a really old recording I did with my B3K and some fresh nickel Rotos into my GK800RB I used to use.
It wasn't bad but this clip made me upgrade my Ric's pups for something brighter and eventually I went away from wanting a B3K after getting my AO(I foolishly broke the B3K trying to install a green LED). After that, I found better tones by stacking two overdrives
Playing: FNMfailwRotos.mp3 - picosong

@FaithNoMan Your Faster Disco track sounds real good. I hear that mid grunt you're talking about. Its always interesting to learn how others approach Gould tones. Crazy to think that Peavey and a Tubscreamer was enough when I was a beginner

Thanks man!
And that was just the B3K by itself.

I definitely get a better tone with the combo of A/O and Oxford or the X.

I can’t wait to try it with the YYZ. New clip time when I get it:)

(Side note: I fully expect to hear “wow, that’s you playing a bass. GROSS.” I love this forum.)

P.S. ain’t nothing gonna wrong with Peavey+screamer. That’s what Billy used:)

More Tech 21 NYC "YYZ" Pedal growly Goodness from our new album. The YYZ responds like a pissed off beaver with a flaming chainsaw...and stuff.

I love this so much. The song and the bass tone/playing/musicianship. The tone is Geddy-ish in spirit, but not so much that it's a total ripoff. You've taken the Geddy thing and run with it and made it your own. Fantastic stuff.
