A farewell to kings...
I remember when the album came out, I took it to a buddy's place, we sat down and just listened...
Cygnus came on and we just looked at each other, slack jaws, dumbfounded at the absolute awesomeness of that compressed sound.

My vote too. First impulse is there are too many to pick from - all great in their own way. But Farewell to Kings has a sick bass tone above the others, imo.

Power Windows for me tied with Moving Pictures. (Hold Your Fire did not come close to PW for Geddy's tone; PW was punchy and snappy, where HYF seemed kind of muffled and lifeless in comparison). Also, Moving Pictures is the tone I've chased since I started playing in 1985. One reason I'm loving jammit.com for Geddy's solo'd isolated tracks.:bassist:

Au contraire! I strongly believe the 80's era of Rush featured their best work! :hiding:

I totally agree! The 80's stuff from Rush def is my favorite era. And I love signals and I love the keyboards and effects used on that album and the next few albums- awesome stuff ! I'm glad Rush took musical chances, they never lost me. They did make me wonder "whats up with that" when presto and roll the bones came out( I like them both now)

It's funny, but there is something so compelling to me about Ged's tone on Hold Your Fire. Perhaps it's because I'm hearing it in context to his earlier, dirtier tone, or perhaps because of that album's proximity to when I really started playing bass seriously, but it is a singular tone that sits perfectly in the production, and has a tang and fatness that I really enjoy. Sometimes I admit that the strings are a little pingy for my taste, but that sound is so delicious.

His Fender custom shop bass is not made in Madagascar! If you do not like his tone it has nothing to do with him using a Rickenbacker or a Fender. Much of his tone is due to his overdriven Sansamps, and now in addition his Orange AD200.

Btw also the MIJ Geddy is totally worth it.

+++1 on the M.I.J. that bass got some powerful tones!

AFAIK 'Limelight' is the Ric.

Geddy has said that he played the Jazz on 'Tom Sawyer' and used the Ric in the video. 'Limelight' was the reverse - Jazz in the video, Ric on the song.

Think I saw this on the Classic Albums DVD or somewhere on youtube.....

Ok, Sorry for resurrecting this one but Geddy's tone on Fly by Night- the song, not the album as a whole- has really perplexed me. It's probably one of my favorite tones but it sounds smoother than his usual Ric sound. How do you think he got that tone! It's been driving me nuts.

Power Windows for me, closely followed by Hold Your Fire or Signals - just awesomely smooth and snappy, enunciated notes. I mean, I love the flappy gritty 'who needs a rhythm guitar?' playing on Clockwork Angels, but PW is the ultimate for me at the mo.
