Gene Simmons is Good

well good , your can read music. and that experience will carry with you forever. as you said you do apply the theory you learned to play like you do, most rock guitarist and bassists can't read a note of music, but that doesn't make them bad players. but the ones that have a musical education can expand beyond what a fretboard pattern player can. (i.e. Steve Vai, Satriani etc). The best jazz and classical musicians are all music readers just as alot of studio musicians and such and I still stand what I said. to be a musician, you need to be able to read it's written language.

Hey man,I just found out we agree on something! I also prefer Wilber Bascome on "Wired" to Phil Chen on "Blow by Blow." Not just the playing, but the songs in general.I was going to +1 on that the other day when you posted but got called away from the PC.

Sorry for the extended thread hijack...................

as for your sax playing buddy, don't make sense to me, but apparently bass was his true calling and sax wasn't. but because of his previous musical backround learning a new instrument came easier and propelled his bass playing especially since saxophone is such a melodic instrument. so with out his music educational backround, do you think he would have been playing like he is in such a short period of time? didn't your previous musical experience on tuba help you?

glad you agree. i love Jeff Becks ALBUMS. blow by blow was the first instrumental guitar album to go gold and will always be regarded as his finest, but i think Wired is a better record. Wilbur Bascomb plays some really great bass lines throughout the album. the track BLUE WIND is Jan Hammer playing synth bass and the drums though, but i think it sounds cool anyway.

they wrote it? was it in notation on music ledger sheets? or did they go we will jam on this 8 times then a chorus , another repeat for second verse then will change key for 16 bar solo then fade out with chorus...thats not writing that's jamming

Are you kidding me? I mean....do you really believe this, or are you just out for a (s)TROLL?
If so, breathtaking arrogance, my man. Kudos.

...I like you to check out Tales from Topographic Oceans or Relayer by Yes and just call that jamming. They have jamming moments true, but I don't think you can write off a lot of the material on those albums as merely jamming.

Person A is very creative and can conceptualize great music but cannot write the music down on paper. Person A dictates his ideas to person B who puts the notes on paper. Person C is able to play the written music note for note from the paper produced by person B, but C has no original ideas that he can call his own. Who would you rather be: A, B or C?

Sorry, but without names and actual proof, I don't believe this any more than I believe Carol Kaye played Jamerson's parts on old Motown songs. I think you could understand why...anyone can make these claims, but without proof, they're merely rumors. Besides, there's nothing on those albums that Gene couldn't do.

I gave you a huge hint. What more can I do? LOL

Cliff Williams is most definitely NOT an amazing bass player. There's a difference between KNOWING when not to play, and just not being able to play.

JPJ knew when not to play, Geddy Lee knew when not to play, Cliff Williams just can't play.

The only times I've heard Cliff Williams play was in AC/DC stuff. I don't think the lines he played in those songs are any thing to really brag about. Then again, I don't think Angus Young is really anything to brag about either or AC/DC as a whole for that matter.. Same simple bass lines, same 3 or 4 chords in their tunes. IMO if they had more talent they would show it in their writing ability.

Now that being said, since I've never heard them outside of the AC/DC setting it is possible they are all much better than what we hear on their LP's. Though I doubt it.

And to whoever said "if you can't read music your just a player not a musician." That's simply not true and somewhat of an elitist attitude IMO. I know quite a few people that can't read a lick of music but are pretty fluent on several different instruments. Being able to read music does not make one a good musician. That being said, I can read music.
