Gene Simmons is Good

Gene Simmons is a circus freak actor who happens to also play a little bass.

The music at a Kiss show is secondary to the show.
Nonsense. If that were true, then their records wouldn't have sold. I can watch people breathe fire or wear makeup at the circus. And if it were true, the music wouldn't have lasted almost 40 years now and have almost as many people talking about it today as did in 1976.

In fairness he did say a bass god, which is understood to be a bit different from a God type of god. Either way, I think you have touched on a big part of this problem. Celebrity worhsip. Its sickening. I have a lot of heroes, people who I look up to and inspire me that I don't know, but the worship level things are taken too is why this kind of discussion gets all ugly. celebrities take dumps, have BO if they dont shower, get the flu, do laundry, and all number of other things gods wouldn't do. They are admirable for what they accomplish, they are NOT worthy of worship.

Exactly.

This is by far the stupidest of the Gene Simmons threads. For some reason, everyone's out for blood with Gene (pardon the pun). I've heard a ton of worse bassists get much more respect on here. Stupid.

Of course it's stupid. That's part of the fun of this thread. Its utter pointlessness and silliness. It could go on for years like this.

You don't think I'm actually taking any of this seriously do you? :)

LOL! You don't but I do. KISS is serious business and a huge inspiration to me. At the time I was all into "serious" music like ELP, Yes, Crimson, Tull...and KISS came along and made me realize that music is also supposed to be fun.

Come on Jimmy. You're putting me on, aren't you?

I don't know. Sure music should be fun or at least evoke some emotional response in the listener. But there is a limit to how badly executed it can be before I turn it off.

I admit though, when I was in my teens I liked Tommy Sands and thought he was a great singer. And I thought Gene Vincent was a great guitar player then too.

Oh God. What have I done? Another sacred cow maligned.:hiding:

I am not kidding in the least, 62. Not even a little. I think their music is very well-executed. I also think Paul Stanley is a fantastic singer and Ace is one of the most maligned-but-talented guitarists out there. I get just as much out of KISS as I do any other of my favorites.

I also think Tommy Sands isn't half bad for what he does. Had you said Fabian, who really is severely lacking in talent, that would be a different story.

Well, I agree with you about Fabian.

This is just me, but I think that KISS's non makeup era and the Unplugged MTV concert they did are proof enough that their music can stand on its own. They didnt go for blood or bombs or flashpots, or flying rigs in the 80s and mid 90's, that was when they were forced to think more of the music. I personally think that Gene is a great bassist by definition of what a good bassist should be, that is, when he applies himself.

Unholy-One of their best nonmakeup era songs, musically, at least.

Detroit Rock City-Simply one of the best rock songs ever, they had nothing to hide behind here, and this is one of the best performances of the song ever.

You're right he's good at all of that as well....Which makes him a good bass player _and_ a smart guy!

On the show, he actually made the statement to his son that you could have a successful band while being barely proficient on your instrument. Gene is a good player for the type of music he plays but is clearly a better promoter and showman than musician.

I don't see how people here are saying that Paul McCartney is one of the greatest bassists ever and Gene is one of the worst, when Paul is one of Gene's biggest influences, and you can definetly hear it in his playing. They both fill up the space between the guitars and drums in nearly the same way, they both sing and play at the same time, and both bands were extremely successful.

Seems like young Gene was quite the McCartney fan!

Agreed. Gene was a good bass player and wrote some good basslines "Got Love for Sale"-"Love em Leave em". I guess some don't hear it..or never really listened to old Kiss albums. "Saw Her Standing There" is a perfect example of that playing style which Paul admits stealing from Chuck Berry (oh goodness!!!! not Paul!!!). But then again...who didn't steal from Chuck Berry.
