I dont understand why you would post a thread like this, and not be prepared to have people not like him.

I dont like him. So what? That shouldnt affect your opinion on him. And if it does, then you must not be a true fan.

People flamed Ben Kenney of Incubus for playing bass like a guitar. I put a thread up about it, got some negative comments, and it changed my outlook on him. Sure, he plays like a guitarist, but I like that. Did I tell the people who stated their opinion that they were wrong? Of course not, because they are allowed to state their opinion.

1st Amendment my friend.

Its KISS ....either you get it, or you don't...and its ALWAYS been that way... Gene is what he is, and trying to bash people over the head with him is a waste of time and thread.. there are those of us that grew up listening to him and being inspired by him, and there are those who could give a rat's butt. The first songs I learned on bass were Strutter and Goin' Blind and I still love playin' those lines today. I've never had the urge to play any Beatles song on bass, and only learned a few because I had to for whatever band I was in at the time. Paul is a great bass player and musician, but I would rather listen to Gene fart than listen to a Beatles song. And I don't own any Vic Wooten Cd's either BTW.... lets move on.

Oh not at all...A very simple song can be great....In fact, most "technical" songs bore me (not a prog fan)....I can handle the weedly weedly bass or guitar stuff only in small doses..I like songs. I was only trying to point out that while Gene's lines are not difficult, they are not simple 8th notes pumping along, which is okay too when called for.

Secondly, is there such a thing as a bad bass player? I guess you can play or you cant. Being "Good" is relative. Good comapard to who? It is also relative who is saying it. If you are a beginning bass player or not that great then I am sure old Gene seems pretty decent...and he his good if you are terrible.. I dont think many advanced players think Gene is good it all. Why should they. Album sales mean Zip and quite frankly I would bet did not write most of his parts given the way that band functioned. Gene is competent and I have played his songs but why are people so crazy about it?

Also, I suppose it would be impossible to rate any player. You can always use the argument that they were great songwriters and sold albums and have more money than anyone here....which does not make sense because 1. Its irrelevant and 2. This is a BASS PLAYERS Forum, not a popular forum.

Then if all else fails you can always use the "plays for the song" which is why I can say Pete Wentz is a good player. He plays for the song LOL.

It does seem ironic that the 2 bass players lately needing so much defending (Simmons and Waters) diddn't even play on some of thier own songs.

Very well said. I don't hate Gene but there's no musical comparison here. I will go so far as to say that I wish some more recent acts would go further towards the Kiss era when putting on a show (maybe not THAT far, but better than standing around looking bored or pissed while playing your music).

Hell yes, listen to that bassline in "Let Me Know"....How can anyone say that is just average playing I dont get..Its melodic...it MOVES the song..Its about as good as "Eight Days A Week" which is where Gene got alot from...And yes, I know McCartney has better bass lines than Eight Days a Week, but I like it!

Why do people piss and moan and feel bassists need so much defending especially in a thread where nobody is ever bashing the player? Its fine to have opinions as long as it the opinion of the OP?

Who's musical preferences am I talking down? I have no probem with Kiss or Floyd and have said both players were solid. I do have a problem with all the crybabies here though. It is no wonder this forum is such a mess.

Look how defensive people are in the forum about players. Where in this thread did anyone say Simmons sucks?

If the comment I made about both of these guys regarding them not playing on their own albums bothers you than that is your problem. Its a fact, not an opinion.

Ok that's the answer I was hoping for ;)

I personally won't listen to songs that focus more on riffs than chordal progression. As you fairly stated, they are not droning root 8th notes. That in itself can't really be argued even though someone will try. As stated above, he is a good performer, which has no bearing on ability to play. I'll leave it at that.

the thing I'm getting outa this is that some of you think Ace is or was the best musician in the band? WAT he was a drunkard that no one would want to be in a band with. I like Gene i thought he was inventive HE played what he wanted and by his own admission "doesn't give a **** about the kick drum"
Gene is Gene right now he's counting his money and Banging his or someone else's ol'lady

Well, I don't like Gene Simmons or Kiss at all, so I'm not personally offended, I just don't go around telling people how badly they suck.

I thought music was _supposed_ to be entertainment!

I think you can have makeup on and still write good songs...

Kiss did pretty much what every good band has done...Wrote fresh songs and then they ran out of ideas...Happens to every band bar none.
