Yeah, and I'm trying to find opinions of those who have played it. It's not out yet, so I may be waiting a month or two.

Not exactly, "a piece of crap".

Actually to be correct - it is a stupid looking piece of crap. Gene is the reason I chose to play bass. In 1975 I was 12 and he was cool. But let's be honest, the guy is a tool.

I think that is a subjective opinion. Yeah, I would never own an axe bass, but that's just me. Hell, I love the look of the warwick Thumb, but a lot of folks think it looks stupid.

Once again, you're missing the point of this thread. It's not about Gene Simmons, and if he's a tool. I was just asking about his bass.

Sorry dude, you're right. I always thought Gene's best tone and playing were on the first 3 albums ( that's what we called em back then). Back then he was using a Gibson grabber which has a very distinct tone that is difficult to make sound good. Gene made it work. I learned to play copying his playing but he definitely has abandoned his older fans in favor of a fanbase that is more easily exploited and marketed to. That said thanks to gene for the memories and for those first 3 or 4 albums.

Who really knows if Gene actually played on these albums. I wish Spector would reissue the bass they made him. Loved that thing!

Hmmmmm... I never doubted that it was him playing, I always thought he was a solid player for the type of music they did. Cool thing about the grabber was that it had a totally sinister appearance without having to glue a bunch of stage props on it.

With KISS, reality was always blurred. Thus why I wouldn't doubt if Gene had someone else play his parts. I think he'd be more involved with manufacture of KISS merch than deal with the nonsense of recording in a studio.
This by no means is a dig at Gene. The man has always focused on marketing a product rather than being a musician.

I'm pretty sure he mainly used a P bass in the studio back then.
He mainly played a custom bass made by Charlie LoBue live...even after the Gibson endorsement.

Loved the LoBue bass also. I think it had the most stylish body with the binding around the neck pocket.

I assume you're referring to the $5k bass that Gene meets and greets you? The Corts are only $4-500. Find me an Alembic Spoiler for $500, and I'd be so happy.

During Lick it up, and on until the Reunion tour. Don't know if it was an actual "endorsement" but he used them and several Spectors too.

The Punisher II looks sweet. It's basically the same thing as the $5000 version he's selling, just bolt on instead of neck through and Mighty Mite pickups isntead of EMGs, and probably a few other minor changes. No major loss in tone, I wouldn't believe. A set of EMGs should correct any loss of tone.


And yes, Gene definitely played on those early albums, he's been very open about which songs he did not play on later on in KISS' tenure in the 80s and late 70s. He played everything up until the late 70s.

I actually saw KISS last summer and got a ticket on Gene's side of the stage, and not only did he play great, but he sounded great too. Nice tone from the Punisher (which I later found out runs through an SVT II Pro and a single 810).
