For whatever it’s worth, one can easily classify ZZ Top as “rock” or as “electric boogie and blues” depending largely on context.At 70 that’s why I play ZZ TOP!

Simmons’ comments should be taken as a compliment.
Gene Simmons was bassist for KISS, that should say all there is to know about his knowledge of good rock music, which isn't much. We used to call their music "bubble gum rock". Sorry, if I sound harsh.
and he's the guy in the band that lip syncs in concert and faked live albums.

In a similar vein I was surprised to read in Dee Dee Ramone's autobiography that a lot of his bass parts on the classic double live Ramones album "it's alive" were likewise fixed in post. Dee Dee reports in the book that he had to get jacked on black coffee to match the energy of the live guide tracks.
Speaking of REM (who's come up twice in this thread), I was at the supermarket yesterday and heard "It's the End of the World as We Know It" over the PA. That's a 33-year-old song, but to my ears it still feels pretty fresh and certainly nothing like the muzak played in supermarkets when I was 19. Am I just kidding myself? Does REM sound to a kid born in 2001 the way that Perry Como sounds to me?
Paul Stanley has been caught lip-syncing but I don't know about Gene.
However all members of Kiss and their producer Eddie Kramer have admitted at this late date that the live albums are heavily re-recorded commencing with Alive
considering the fact that I watched videos of the latest tour and you could hear Paul sing 4' from the microphone....
Plus I'm pretty sure Paul admitted in his biography that the live albums were faked

i think his connection to modern rock is dead.. hes already proven to be a butthole so it doesnt really matter what he says
I choose to keep the faith in Rock. I have a daughter in college who bought a Strat and is woodshedding Hendrix et al. the old-fashioned way. And she has company. I'm trying to convince her to switch to bass guitar, though lol. And she purchased her gear with money she earned. I'm proud of her. Remember when you played until your fingers bled just in order to build up calluses? That work ethic is alive. In Texas, in her case.

My dad listened to both country and oldies (WCBS-FM, NY circa 70/80s). I listen primarily to music from the 70's but as well as music I grew up on in the 80s. Both those types of music are older now than the oldies my Dad listened to, and at the time that I hated listening to.
