Genz Benz GBE 750 Weird Noise Pops...

Please do, I suspect that it's simpler than it appears.

There will be a small soft pop when switching between channels, as well as the sound of the routing relays that can be heard even without the speakers attached.

What do you mean by "even without the speakers attached" ? Isn't there supposed to be speakers attached to the amp ALL the time, like a minimum of 2 ohms resistance at all times ? :confused:

The pop when swithching channels seems very big to me anyways... :hmm:

This is exactly how it works out in the real world. Under any gigging situation that the amp would be suitable for (this is not a bedroom or living room amp) the switching noise is so small as to be a total nonissue in practice.

No, you do not need a speaker load attached. This is not a tube power amp.

Thanks ! I will go to sleep smarter tonight ! Haha !

Should I warm up the preamp tube before using the amp ? Like leave the amp at idle with the mute on and the tube channel engaged before using it ? Or this is also irrelevent with a solid state amp ?

YEAH !!!! :hyper:

I found the culprit !!!!! :D

It turn out it was my old russian Small Stone pedal that did the pop !!! No wonder it was so "on the beat" and felt like a metronome... It's the cycle of the pedal that does this even though it's not engaged !!!! :p So glad I won't have to bring this amp to the doctor !!! :hyper:

Damn that pedal ! :spit: I may end up buying a nano version of this soon and save real estate on my pedal board also ! :smug:

I still feel that the FET channel is a bit noisy when engaged, but it may be due to my bass pickups... I see that you can't stand very much near the amp cause it's start to worsen when too close... :hmm:

I think I prefer the tube channel anyways... Good lord, that bass amp sounds good ! It's on an Ampeg 810 SVT classic right now... Only thing, I find the lows a little thin, I find myself cranking the low eq and the LF Boost quite a lot to get it where I like the boom ! What do you say LowEZ ? :confused:

I still can't wait to read agedhorse's story on Genz Beanz and the tie with Fender... :cool:

And I sure would like to know the reason of the Wttage difference in some documents about this amp at the 4 ohms level... (Please see post number 8 Agedhorse)... :help:

Yeah, the low end is a bit weak out of the box compared to other amps. It took a little time to dial in the EQ when I first got it. It's got lots of knobs, start turning them. You'll like the results. :bassist:

Did you notice the power rating at 4 ohms in that document ? ... 625 ! Other documents state 675 ! I'm confused ! :hmm:

Yes I have noticed that. Either one of them was wrong, or they bumped up the power at some point in the product run. Anyway, it gives the spec on the back of your amp. Mine says 625W @ 4Ω and it's quite loud. You probably can't even hear a 50W difference anyway.

And congrats on finding the metronome culprit.

If the noise that you hear in the FET channel is a buzz or hum when you get very close to the amp, it is likely that your bass pickups are very poorly shielded against e.m. radiation. Due to the size of the power supply there is a low level field that exists very close to the amp. Most pickups are plenty well shielded against this but some are not. The solution is to stand back a couple of feet... It is not a bedroom amp, it's a pro level touring type product.

+1 to Andy"s comment. Very, very few instruments can be used close to an amplifier without picking up some interference. All of my basses do with the passive ones being the worst. My amps using SMP supplies don't exhibit this behaviour. Unless they still do but it's too high a frequency for my ol' ears to hear! :D

I think you're suffering from "I-just-have-to-find-something wrong-with-this-amp-itis." :D Just play the thing and have fun! Oh, and way to leave out the detail of using an old phase shifter before!

Yeah, it's a great sounding, remarkably flexible amp that's built like a tank. They can be found very inexpensively used if you're patient as well thanks to everyone clamoring over micros. Just play and be happy. :)
