Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 Appreciation Thread

I'm a big fan of the stock Shuguang "C9" this is the tube of choice by Marshall , Mesa , GB , you name it , it's a fantastic tube IMO and great in preamps and Bass amps IME . I am also a fan of the Mullard CV4004 This is a very high quality audio tube and should probably last a lifetime .

I need you guys to verify something for me. I've seen in the manual, and this thread, where the Shuttle 9.0 is okay without any speaker load connected. I have a regular Saturday nite gig in a bar/restaurant with a Acoustic/Electric/Bass & sometimes percussion instruments. I played it last Saturday using the 9.0 with a Neox 112-T and also FOH thru the D.I. The FOH is QSC K series tops with K series subs, MixWiz board and stage monitors. I couldn't really hear my stage rig very well but the FOH thru monitors sounded fine. I am going to go up to the venue tomorrow morning and see if I can just bring the shuttle going into the board/FOH system. IOW, no cabinet! Hoping that this works as it will make my setup/load-in etc. a breeze.
The question comes as; Does the master volume need to be turned up/down, doesn't matter? Also, I am going to try it pre with the EQ coming from the board and Post with EQ flat on the board. I believe this entire scenario is doable, but I want to make sure I don't hurt anything. Thoughts, suggestions etc.

No problem running it unloaded. It was designed for fly dates as a preamp only where no cabinet was available. Kind of like a "powered" preamp & DI.

Worked great! The electric guitar player, however, wants to EQ almost ALL the lowend out so it won't clash with the acoustic guitar and so he can hear the notes distinctly! I've got to figure out a way to change his thoughts on this. My bass sounded like a 3rd guitar to me. Very unsatisfying. Of course, none of this is the equipments fault in any way!:D

In a band setting, IME, there is zero reason to pull low end out of the mix to hear the acoustic.
Sounding like an ass I know, but your guitar player hasn't a clue.
If anything, the low end he wants is what he hears playing solo and likes that sound.
In a band context, I would do the opposite and draw low end out of the acoustic (given that your bass wasn't too boomy to begin with).

Might as well bring a banjo with you next time.

Gonna try a new tube just for the fun of it.

After discussing what I'm after with Doug @ www.dougstubes.com (great guy - very knowlegeable), I have a Penta 12AX7M (a.k.a. Shuguang) inbound. Supposed to be a super clean and warm tube with airy highs, full bass, low noise. I'm most interested in running my 9.0 as clean as I can get it, so we'll see what this does. Small bit of cash spent if I don't like it.

Impressions in a few days.

Playing tonight at Kingston Mines from 10:30 to 3:30. My Shuttle 9 in tow.

Oh, the DI sound great into various soundcards, m-audio, rme, motu..etc..

I think though, for grins and giggles, im going to try a couple of odd-ball tubes this weekend. 12BH7 and a 12DW7. I love the BH7 as a phase inverter and figure ill try it out...I dont want my amp to distort as I have pedals to do that anyways. If it sounds great to me, ill post a clip or two.

Guys did anyone else struggle with the concept of ignoring the clip light at the output stage?

That's my biggest problem with the amp, trying to get a clean tone I try to boost the master (I use an 18v preamp and find the gain stage ion S9 gives a bit too much grit). I can't always hear if I'm doing speaker damage due to loud bands, poor acoustics and earplugs.

Exactly how safe is it to have that "clip" light (which isn't really a clip light) coming on with literally every note?

Otherwise this is a very impressive little head, and my maing gigging amp with my Berg AE2x12

Just flashing isn't a problem, just indicates that you are well into the output tube emulation limiting but I wouldn't recommend playing it with the LED on more than it's off. At that point, your speakers may be taking quite a pounding.
