Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 Appreciation Thread

I got "frying" noise from my 2 month old Shuttle 9 today when I switched it on.(mute still on). Went away on re power but worrying. I swapped the tube with the spare I had bought "just in case" and cleaned the valve base with servisol 10. It's OK now, but how many people are having "valve" issues?

I've never had valve issues with my almost 1 year old 9.0. But I have gotten nasty frying noises before because loose connections in my chain. I'm sure you already ruled that out but just in case thought I'd bring it up.

What was the new tube you used? Any subtle difference in tone? I'm still wondering if I should bother exploring tube replacement.

No it wasn't a cable issue, i replaced the tube with another Ruby tube....thought i'd stick to GB's original type, but I'm now wondering about other makes. I don't remember having any problems with old tube amps in the 70's...Selmer Marshall and Fender that got thrown in and out of vans!

I returned the first one I bought to Musicians Friend for that reason. It would happen on stand by and with no cable plugged in. Well now the one I have that they sent me is doing it again. I bought a power conditioner (Monster) thinking that that might be the issue, but it did it on my gig I just came from tonight...I love the amp, but am tempted to go solid state. I would be interested to know what tube is recommended, preferably the most reliable. I've only owned the amp about 6 months and probably done 25 or do gigs with it at the most (there is an amp at my stay gig).

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks,
John

Anybody using different makes of Tube? Perhaps Agedhorse could chip in with some info on premature tube failure?
Anybody tried a Groove tube? I had them in my Bassman back in the 70's and had no problems......given it's only one tube to replace now it's not such a cost issue!

I think with a good valve you have no worries. I never bring a back up but may start bringing a screw driver and extra tube just in case.

When I gigged an all tube head, tubes where a constant worry. I always had a RH450 in the car just in case. When I got the 9.0 I sold my back up for a 210 and some filter purchases...Damn my filter addiction.

By the way, anyone else notice envelope filters sound best through a Genz Benz? Not sure if that was a consideration of there's while designing but they nailed it anyways...Genz Benz brings out the wet and juicy!:bassist:

There is no such thing as a Groove Tube, a Mesa Boogie Tube, a Ruby Tube etc..........

For current production tubes there really is a limited supply.

There is New Sensor which makes tubes under the brand name of EH, Tung Sol, Mullard, Gold Lion, Sovtek, Svetlana (fake not real), and maybe more. All these tubes are built in the original Sovtek factory though I had someone mention they may have moved production. Things are really really bad in Russia right now. I'm not real crazy about the marketing behind all of these brands. For instance the (now branded) Mullard EL34 is the same identical tube as the (now discontinued) Sovtek EL34. The EH 12AX7 is the same exact tube as the Tung Sol 12ax7 with a different getter installed on the top.

Svetlana (real Svetlana) known in the US now as Winged C or =C=. These are the best tubes being made today IMHO. Unfortunately they do not make any 12ax7/ECC83 tubes currently IIRC. Their 6L6, EL34, etc.... tubes are the best in the business. These tubes are actually relay made in St Petersburg Russia. Where real Svetlana's are made. In the EU they are labeled Svetlana, in the USA they are labeled =C=.

Sino China. I believe there are several plants in China that have produced Vacuum Tubes but I think most of them have closed now. There still are some Chinese tubes being made though and they are not that bad. Factories are closing pretty fast in China right now as we are not consuming.

An then there is JJ Tesla. They have some excellent tubes as well. If you like warm the ECC83 is great. If you like a little brighter and a touch more the ECC803 is nice but can be more micro-phonic because of the longer plate structure.

All that being said todays current production tubes are not and never will be made to the old standards of the likes of GE, Mullard, RCA, Tung Sol, Sylvania, Genalex etc........

6 months is good.

I had a friend just install a set of the (New Sensor) Tung Sol 5881's into his Tweed Deluxe Saturday and his amp is in the shop today. These things just do not hold up/not made to standards like the real counterparts used to be.

The content of the metallurgy (purity) alone will not let the function as well as the old Military ready Vacuum Tubes.

So there you have it, your current choices.

I have used both Telefunken long plate and JAN Sylvania 12ax7WA's ( long plate ) in my 9.0 and I thought it was an improvement over the stock. Right now I have the Syvania in my 9.0, I wanted a ruggedized tube in there because I've been doing a lot practicing/gigging.
