Genz Benz Streamliner, Part 10

I have been looking for a good deal on a NeoX 212T. Don't see many for sale other than thru retailers. I've been running mine STL900 thru my Hartke HyDrive 410. Sounds good, but not what I'm looking for as a pairing. Might have to take a run over to Bass Central and work a trade in on it.

I remember you saying something about that. I play in some loud groups, and we play big dancehalls and outdoor venues. I gave up a GK MB212 500w combo because it didn't bring enough to the table. I loved the sound, and it was VERY loud, but I couldn't get it where I needed it sometimes. If it came as a MB800 212 at 800w, I would still have it. I think the GK 412 would be a killer cab, but I'm NOT packing that everywhere I go. I guess I could have gotten the powered extension for the 212, but I was ready to move up. And I wanted the tube tone, especially with fretless bass. So... here I am.

I've always wanted a GB NEO, but you can understand my concerns. The local cab is nearby, priced right, and a good TB'er to deal with. I just don't want to blow it up. I'm still pondering it all, and I do appreciate everyone's input.

totally understand buffbillh.

One of my best gigs I had was when I used my STM-900 with two, 8 ohm Epifani UL410 cabs and my 55-02D in a traditional country/modern country band at a very large outdoor biker bar. That rig sounded awesome but I only used two cabs that one time last summer. Aint luggin two large cabs around no more. First time I ever did two 410's. I had just bought the second UL cab and had to try it once. OK, got that outta my system. Wasn't a real big hassle just dont wanna make that a habit.

And buffbill if you recall I mentioned I recently did a outdoor gig with my blues rock band outside of a Houston Central Mkt. I used a single NeoX 212T (no PA) and the STM-900 with P5 w/flats. With the SVT settings it cut thru real nice and with master @ 2:00 the rig punched along nicely. I was asked to turn down. I like to use the NeoX cab when I know I have a gig where the setup can be a long walk or thru heavy auto/ped traffic. Its just my easiest cab to lug around. I use my little folding cart so it comes along nicely from large parking lot onto gig area.

Maybe a Uber 410 would do ya good? They make em in 4 ohm right? I almost bought a new one last spring but found a hardly used UL410 here on TB so I went with that to have two 410's. Now I just sold that second UL410 to a TBer last week. Never needed/used two 410's since that one time. :rollno:

Think I'm gonna keep the other UL410 afterall as I still really like what my BBE or Alembic F-1X pres w/Crown XLS1500 will do bridged @ 8ohms for about 1100 watts. :eek: Two bands I was with last couple years gave me good PA support so I was bringing a single 212T or even just a Eden D210T to gigs. Those gigs have slowed down and now just started wtih new band that offers no PA for bass.

This band is doing Motown/Stax/Classic Rock. I'll use the 212T w/STM-900 at small club gigs then the UL410/pre/pwer amp at larger clubs, etc. You gotta do what ya gotta do for the gigs man. :bassist:

But now I'm kinda looking for a GB 9.0 or 9.2 to use in the new band for a cleaner tone. Maybe a pre pedal into the STM-900 effects will work too. Sigh. :( It never ends I guess. peace y'all. e.

410 cabs just don't get me where I need to go with the type of upright bass sound I'm going for. Just not enough fat and bottom. I tried stacking my 410 with my 15 - sounded great until I got it up to volume. The 10's were working too hard, and I wasn't digging the tone from them.

Sometimes 15's can be tubby or lack punch in the mid and high notes with my upright. Not a problem on electric bass, though. But 12's seem to be the ticket so far. Or the right 15 cab. 12's that deliver big, solid lows seem to work well with out being too tubby, and 12's don't sacrifice the mid/upper register that I've experienced with many 15's.

STL900 arrived an hour ago.. and no cab in the house..lol, I have the BG250 and Ashdown 5-15 and given there is only so much oooh..aaaah...ooooh value in the cool blue lights i went through the following..

#1: line level DI out to>MOTU 828mkII @ studio desk>KRK VXT8.. WOW!!! outstanding..low noise, great attack a really really REALLY good DI ..far far better than the Hartke and TC i have tried... certainly truth in advertising here and a BIG sell point to me was the "studio quality" DI and the line level output.

#2: A quick headphone comparision vs TC-BG250 was completed in 10 seconds... light years better.

#3: Now I have currently rigged STL900 pre-out to BG250 aux in; and I hear a massive improvement to the preamp of the TC (as you would expect) and its surprising useable..

My plan was to consider modding the TC for a amp out/spkr in sockets instead of getting a 112 for practice (its in the living room) but may simply use as #3 above for practice..

Anyway, my used Uber Quad should be here within a week though and expecting another leapfrog in sound quality! :hyper:

I run my STL-900 through a fEARful 15/6 and I really dig the sound I'm getting out of it. I'd been through a TC Electronics RH750, Ampeg SVT-7 Pro, Ampeg SVT-8 Pro, and finally the Streamliner 900. When I get back to the States I will be selling those other amps and get another STL-900 for backup.

With the fEARful I'm getting a great bottom end with very articulate mids. I run the settings:

Gain swtich: Engaged
Gain: 2 o'clock
Volume: 10 o'clock
Bass: 10 o'clock
Mid: 2-3 o'clock
Mid Freq: 600
Treble: 9-10 o'clock
Master: to need

I'm really digging this setting with the fEARful 15/6. Old school tubey kind of sound with a small tad a breakup. I love it. Occasionally I try my other amps and keep coming back to the Streamliner.

I keep hearing I need to try the Orange Terror Bass 500 or 1000 but I can't see how I could get significantly better than what I'm getting with the Streamliner.

An update..

I had been playing the STL900 pre/ TC BG-250 Amp (using aux in) with my Ibanez SR1200 (nordstrand pups) and loving it, and this morning i plugged in the G&L SB-2 and holy schmolie!!..talk about classic thawump tones..

I can certainly see why folks raved about the STL with a P bass.

Coming from a guitar background i have zero desire for transparent amps with flat responses.... this thing plain stuns..and I am only using it as a pre-amp so far, through the amp/speaker of a $400 combo!!

I pickup my Uber Quad on Friday so i may be having the weekend in...:D

So I am back home with the Uber Quad and plugged into the Streamliner... and i have noticeable hum..

With the input on mute, the level of hum reduces as you increase gain, dramatically increases as you increase volume and is proportionally variable with changes in the master volume.

My socket is grounded, and adding a class II power conditioning rack for mains filtering does nothing...

any input from you folks before i look to get the amp exchanged?..thx
