I just did the "5751 tube in V1" thing in my STM-900. So far I'm liking it. For one thing, the wallboard at home doesn't rattle so much.

As I packed my SL900 to ship it off to another TB'er yesterday, I reflected on a what a great piece of engineering it is.

The baked-in voicing might not be everybody's cup of tea, but man, what a piece of industrial engineering. Effortless power, terrific protection circuits, tons of gain without any hiss or other artifacts...

If only my finances were better, I would have kept it for the silky-smooth tube DI alone...

I just had my first practice with the Streamliner and I am very impressed with it. The guys in the band said that it sounded great, warm and round but it didn't get lost in the mix. I really enjoyed the combo of the Streamliner and the Avatar TB153.
I'm pretty sure that some of the pedals I have been using for tone sweetening will be going up for sale soon.

I had a great gig Saturday night with my SL900, using the so called SVT setting with the mids up just a little higher. I think I might try swapping tubes in V1 just to see what I get.

Pre-Gain - 3 o'clock
Vol - 3 o'clock
Bass - 9 o'clock
Mid - 9 o'clock
Mid Frequency - 220
Treble - 12 o'clock

I did a studio session last night with the Streamliner 900, an Ampeg 410 (the sealed one... I forget the model name. 410e?), and my trusty Warmoth G4 with dual Darkstar pickups. It was for an 80's hair metal, butt rock, glam type band. For those keeping score at home, I just replaced the tubes with stock Mesa 12AX7's because I had a faulty V1 tube and decided to change them all while I was in there.

The engineer to took a pre-EQ DI from the Streamliner, and mic'd the cab with a 414 at about 4' away, just off center of the top right cone. I dialed in the cab to be aggressive. Gain switch on, bass at 10 o'clock, mids at 2.5k, and set around 1 o'clock, treble at noon. Gain around 1 o'clock, volume around 11 o'clock, and master to suit the level at the board while still providing enough to get that Ampeg 410 rocking.

I played fingerstyle over the bridge pickup with both pickups on. Absolutely killer recorded tone. After he phase aligned the tracks in post, the low end from the DI was clean and filled out the track nicely. The mic signal had gobs of midrange, treble, and saturation that worked very nicely. He set the levels with the DI low passed around 400hz, and it was blissful.

Not really anything new, just drooling over my Streamliners first real studio appearance.

I just practice tested my STM600 after rolling the tubes last week. V1:Sovtek 12ax7 LPS V2:JJ 12AT7 V3:JJ 5751. Sounds more amazing than ever. Got lots of compliments on its "fullness" from the rest of the band and I was able to run the master lower than previously. I no longer feel like the 600 is a little underpowered for my band. It's amazing that using lower gain tubes has actually increased loudness overall.
