Genz Benz Streamliner Part 3!!!!

Jeez, is it me or has another denser element been found that can be added to the periodic chart... The way I read this before all the confusing extra posts had been added to the fray was roughly: CAN THE FRICKIN' THING DO OVERDRIVE/DISTORTION out the pre-EQ DI?

Or am I just projecting what I would want? ; }

If you are primarily thinking of buying a different amp based on the sound of a PRE EQ DI.... don't do it. The differences will, by definition, be so subtle as to not be worth it.

This is the answer to my question, I really appreciate it. I'm sorry to have been an annoyance & thanks for the time.
My point is this...

If my pre-EQ direct out tone is going to change very little from a $425 GK MB500 to a $830 Streamliner 600 so the crowd hears essential the same thing I'm going to choose the GK.
My backline tone may be effected but with the drummer, singer, annoyingly loud guitar player those nuisances will be mostly lost anyways.

If I knew the crowd was going to hear the improvement of the Streamliner (And it IS that much better) I would certainly buy it.

Thanks for the time guys, you helped me out a lot.

Per Greenboy's post above.... hold on until Hasbeen or Agedhorse posts up. I would be surprised if the pre gain control impacted the pre EQ DI, but if it does, then this is a different thing and you might get what you are looking for.

The Genz guys are very good about answering these sorts of questions. I'm sure they will be by shortly, or by tomorrow to specifically answer your question regarding 'how much tube' from that initial gain stage is in that pre EQ DI (i.e., when you crank the gain knob, does the pre EQ DI signal get hotter with more tube grind?).

I'll wait quietly, I don't want to stir the pot or upset anybody but some facts would be great. If the Streamliner puts out a better pre-EQ signal (Which I use for 99% of my gigs) vs a SS, I'll buy it period. If there is no change to my audience I'll save the $400 bucks.

FWIW I have never bought an amp based on it's DI capabilities. I don't always go through the board and when I do I want a great stage tone for me and the band. The streamliner does that great. Also, if I record I can use post eq and adjust to my needs, and again the Streamliner should offer great things in this area too. I am looking forward to what the GB guys have to say about this whole DI discussion though.

If you take a look at the block diagram in the manual which is on their website, you can see that the pre-EQ signal is taken after the first tube stage. This should give you a bit of warmth and natural compression in your signal compared to an all SS design, so if that is what you are looking for, then yes, I would think there is some sonic benefit. I have a similar topology in the pre-EQ signal in my preamp, and there is definitely some added goodness from the tube stage.

Let's simplify.

If you're sending your PRE signal to the board, think of it as if you were plugging your bass directly into the board.

If you're sending your signal POST, then think of it as if your amp was being sent to the board. Anything you adjust on the amp will be sent to the soundman.

If you want the tube sound of the Streamliner in the main mix (the mix your crowd hears), then send your signal POST to the board. Remember, any adjustments you make on stage will affect your sound in the mains...

This is largely a frustration that effects players always face too. And non-effects users don't usually have a clue why the effects users seem to be having a period about it, and the dumb soundguys who won't either mic 'em up or provide a better DI solution. And then everybody using effects says, screw ya, I'll go post EQ. And that in turn knocks over another domino.

Chain reaction. Avoidable, but usually not.

So then again, for live OD users, time to mic up because the DI is for clean players only.

Only if you're taking the signal pre-EQ.
Post-EQ and you're all set.

Tunaman...I can save you even more money. Just keep what you have.
Hell, I'll give you $160 for that Nav if ya want. ;)

The Nav, IME has a VERY clean DI on it. And it can be a very warm sounding preamp as well. Get a Shuttle 9.0 and use the Nav as the pre and use the 9.0 just for power.

I'm on the fence about the SL900 (love my Shuttle 9.0). I'm waiting a bit longer to hear a few more opinions on how clean it gets/stays.

Kinda covered that, chief. A lot of soundies don't like post-EQ and often, justifiably so. Depends on the players and he stage and the cabs - and the attitudes and practices both sides of the board. Guys playing tube rigs have many of the same gripes. Myself, I say bring your own speaker-level DI and/or mic when you have these kind of rigs, and know how and why to use them. And hope you'll get a little cooperation.

Why is it that some people get all cranky and defensive about other people spending money. I suppose there is some internet moral high ground in trying to prove that others are idiots for "wasting" their own hard-earned money.

The Streamliner does not cure cancer (as far as I can tell), it will not provide stability in the Middle East, and it isn't as good in the morning as a cup of Sumatra Blue Batak from Peet's. It is however a new and interesting take on bass amplification, and is making some people very happy, be it GAS or otherwise. Buy it for what it is. Or don't. Whatever floats your boat.

Often when I have FOH there is a supplied backline so this is all a moot point. That's why I have a DI at the end of my small pedal board so I at least have some control before the signal goes out of my hands.

The Pre EQ DI on my nav is great, sounds like a SS with a little tube warmth, my pre EQ DI on my GK 1001RB was a little harsh no warmth hence I replaced it with the Nav. My Sansamp RBI pre EQ DI was clean, modern, warmer than the GK not the Eden

And the Pre EQ DI on the Streamliner is???

Interesting, if somewhat tired discussion. Since we all hear things differently, perhaps it would be in your best interest to try one for yourself, borrow one or buy one with a full return guarantee. Let us you what you think it sounds like. ;)
