Genz-Benz Streamliner Part 5

nope ... and I have no earthly idea how to do that since there is not such an option available

That little red "x" (broken link) is what I get when I copy the photo's URL link from Snapfish.

In Snapfish I first double-click the photo I want from the album/list. That enlarges it. I then right click the photo and select "copy image location", then "paste" that between
.

If that doesn't work I don't wish to derail the thread any further, but I'd be happy to work it in PM.

Finally....Genz Benz Streamliner 900 in hand! First impressions are favorable. It is an incredibly simple interface. I began reading the instruction manual only to realize, this head is so intutive that an instruction manual just seems like a gratutious obligation that simply must accompany any new amp inside the packaging. The head sounds great flat, and only when I get her set in the mix at tonights gig will I know how best to dial her in with my 73' Jazz. My singers voice is on the fritz so we are bringing in a bada$$ local bluesman to entertain the folks tonight. While playing along with some recordings we will play with him tonight, I got my first sense of how this head sits in the mix, and I must say I really like what I hear. For me, it is ALL about how basses, and amps etc.. sit in the mix because I have owned instruments that sound incredible....until you hear them in the mix with the band. As stated in prior posts, it definetely has a high end studio pre (think Avalon) thing going on. The sound is simultaneously thick, lush and round, but with a clarity that seems to slice right up the middle of this pillowey cushion. I have played 5 different Fender and Musicman basses thru her thus far, and all sound like as good an incarnation of themselves as I have heard to date. So far, I have run her thru a GB NEOX212T, but will pair her up with my Avatar TB 153 for the gig tonight. The verdict is still out on how the STRMLNR will stack up against my beloved GB Shuttlemax 6.0, and it will likely take me a couple handfuls of gigs to reach a conclusion. An intimate up close look at this setup thru the eyes of my Flip Camera will be pieced together after tonights gig and posted soon in the interested of offering yet another assesment tool to those on the fence. Cheers All :)

I concur!

Got a sweet surprise this morning when my amp arrived a day early. Yay! +1 to the above. I only got about a half hour in with it, but it is NICE!

My first thought: DB750-city. I don't have one to compare with it, but my memory tells me this is definitely in the same territory. When I first got my RH450 to replace the Aggie, I thought even it could get about 90% of the tone of the Aggie with the right settings. The STM900 gets far closer to the fatness and girth of the notes, and at only 6.5 lbs! There's no way I'd ever go back to the DB750, not with this is my arsenal. ;) Can't wait to do a real A/B, though.

The RH450 is still an awesome amplifier. I haven't spent a lot of time comparing the two just yet, only a few minutes back and forth in my bedroom. My take so far is that the STM900 is definitely more for me, but I wouldn't say it kills the RH450, necessarily. They're both just a little different. So far, I'm definitely preferring the STM900. Wish it had a built-in tuner and compressor like the 450, but I guess it couldn't be called a "streamliner" if it did. :p

Edit: After further review, the STM900 does kill the RH450. :D

I continue to be amazed at the different sounds in this amp, even though I have had it for around a month or so. I thought I was a 220hz kind of guy on the mid selector. But tonight I gave the 600hz a little try and I think I like it even more. Small adjustments on the settings really put one in a slightly different territory (even though big adjustments are still musical) - they all have the streamliner sound, but each has a bit of its own personality. I love it more and more as time goes by.

faulknersj - I look forward to your thoughts with the TB153, as that is my rig as well, with a Jazz bass though.

So the Amp finally showed around 8pm last night. Spend a few hours on it with headphones. Couple of hours today with the UB410.

Let me first say the SL900 loves the UB410... but I suspect the SL900 and the Bergantino NV610 would be the ultimate pairing. The preamp is everything tube people are looking for... full, thick, somewhat interactive in nature, and totally impossible to screw up the midrange. This is the first amp where I have felt really good about boosting the midrange, and like the sound of all three of the selectable frequencies boosted, even to the extreme ranges of the control. Ive never experienced that before. On other amps (and the easiest comparison for me to draw here is the Ampeg stuff, as it's also "tubey" and has a selectable midrange control) when given the choice if either boosting one frequency or cutting another I always opted to cut, as boosting always sounded too "peaky" and gross. Not so here. Truly no way to get a bad sound. I like both 200 AND 600 boosted to about 3o'clock... gotta wait till I jam with the band to see which cuts through in a more pleasing way.

I also like the different overdrive characteristics the midrange control elicits. I tend not to drive it into distortion, but I like just a little dirt, and will be using a compressor in front of the amp to keep a more consistent overdrive flavor than my right hand technique affords me unaided :D

There's so much I want to say, but it's all been said before... this really is the best sounding head I've ever owned (for this type of sound).... and I've owned at least 2 of everything. I am sad to say I'm a little disappointed with the output versus the 6.0 heads. No way this thing is putting out 900 watts RMS, especially when it's only drawing a maximum of 650 from the wall... I ran the FX out to a Carvin DCM1000L and it just destroyed the SL900 in terms of overall volume. This is not to say I'm unhappy, as the SL900 coupled with the UB410 will be plenty for most situations, but I'm pretty sure I foresee a UB810 in my near future....

I own just about every make of modern, pro amp out there. We strive to be quiet, quiet, studio quiet....fans and all.

You might want to call the shop and walk through it. 480.941.0705

Ya I did and there's definetely an issue. I was throwing all this stuff that I was trying out there and got the feeling everyone thought I was crazy including KJ:smug:, but compared the M6 directly with the SL900 and it was wayyyy louder at playing volumes. Probably a simple tube swap would suffice, but Jeff just said he would send a new one. Just a few more days again for that tone.:bassist:. Also I am happy with the GB CS and definitely not worried about the new one. Nothing is 100%, even with QC and it really is about how companies handle the ones that do make it to the end user and then have an issue. GB rules in this department...and there amps aren't bad either.;)

Its a SL party! Everyone gets theirs today! Awesome
Its a little bigger than I thought, maybe shouldn't have sold my PHA-1, my bad

Anybody do studio work & test the DI vs another amp & find a difference?

Dude, if you got yours we will be expecting a DI overview! :D

Out of curiosity are you comparing them at band level or bedroom volume?
If the streamliner is punchier than the RH450 I'm going to have to try one out.

Bedroom level. Gain matched and volume matched, volume right around 9:00 on each give or take, so not very loud, all eq set level, though I did try to EQ the RH450 for a smoother and wider tone at point. STM900 had a noticeable weightier punch to it. Still haven't done a thorough A/B yet, just messing around between the two, so take what I say with a grain of salt. :smug:

This may have been covered in one of the other Streamliner threads, but does anyone know if they're going to put out rack ears for these amps? If I were to get one, I'd want to mount it in my rack.

Yep, just not available yet. The design will be a shelve type.
