Genz Benz Streamliner Part 9

tunaman was talking about the Epifani 310 UL cab as a great match for the SL900, the impedance is 5.3ohms, would that be equivalent to 4 or 8 ohms?
(sorry for the noob question, I'm trying like hell to learn this stuff)

It's basically like 4 ohm from what I understand.

OK, then the SL900 is 900W at 4 ohms and the UL2 310 peaks at 750w at 4 ohms creating substantial headroom.
(and I sort of understand that headroom isn't necessarily more amp watts then the cab rating, but for general purposes the above combo has sufficient headroom.
yes?

I'm looking hard at purchasing a SL900 and want to know a good cab match.

...The berg HS cab provided the "too much of a good thing" wiht that head to my ears, so maybe I should give it another go now that I have 2 Berg AE cabs....hmm...

Which Berg cab are you describing?

Do it. I have a UL610 and a UL210 and the Streamliner goes beautifully with either of them :bassist:

STL900 with a UL610? :bassist: WOW!

So, I was one of the first to get this amp, and like an idiot, I sold it not too long after, despite loving it.....

And, like all the other "Best" gear Ive ever owned like the Bergantino HS410 and NV610, Lakland 44-94 etc..... I'm buying one again!

:rollno:

Think of cab impedance relative to solid state amp output power like water coming through a hose. The more you turn the faucet the more water comes out. So, the lower the impedance of a cab, the more power is generated and applied to the cab, on a continuous and relatively linear scale.

Of course, cab power rating is only a loose guide to maximum power that you can apply to the cab without doing any 'heat damage' to the voice coil. Most heads rarely put our their maximum power (and if they do, it is typically in brief peaks, which is no big deal), and most cabs will 'fart out' (i.e., reach their mechanical driver limits) long before the voice coils are damaged.

So, the power matchup with the Streamliner900 and the 310UL is a good one, with the Streamliner 'running' at 5.3 ohms (so around 90% full power or so), and the Epifani's very high quality drivers being able to use all that power (i.e., the UL's have very good mechanical specs that can use almost all the power they are rated for thermally).

That was my typical long winded way or saying 'yes, good match-up regarding power'. Whether the 'smooth, fat, polite mid response of both the head and that cab are 'too much of a good thing for you' can only be answered by you.

My Epi 310 UL handles the 900 well (Actually its paired up with the 9.2max right now)

I've had the volume up to 75%, the cones are moving but it sounds great (With earplugs because thats DAMN loud)

You could surely utilize a 410 though... I do feel that if I maxed the 9.2 with a low B I would be really challenging the 310 UL (But it would be REALLY loud)

Yesterday I was at 50% & I needed ear protection for sure

Absolutely treat it as a 4 ohm!

While the Epifani cabs are REALLY nice... I think the Streamliner has the effect of making other cabs better than they are... so what I'm saying is that you have TONS of choices for 410s out there that will pair well with the Streamliner.

I bought the Epifani cab to make up for deficiencies in my amp (pre-Streamliner) & bass which wasn't warm enough. Now that you have a streamliner you can grab non-warm cabs & still have good results

So what I'm saying is that Genz UBERs, Berg AE, GK NEOs, Markbass 104HR etc are also good pairings & still light weight... Not naturally warm cabs but the Streamliner brings out the best in em... you have a lot of choices.

If you notice a lot of companies are going back to Ceramics claiming that they are moving back because they are warmer, more vintage vibe than the Neos... which I agree with BUT, you have a Streamliner, you HAVE vintage, you don't have to truck Ceramics to get the vibe.

People that have other amps could use ceramics, not us. We go light with our amp & our cabs, we have monstrous pillowy tube warmth... oh yes, we have our cake & eat it too

It's in-between; it is what it is: 5.3ohm.
Two of these run with a parallel connection would be aprx 3.6ohm.

Correction of incorrect information above:

2 x 5.3 ohm cabinets in parallel is 2.65 ohms.

Treat this cabinet as 4 ohms nominal when matching up with any amplifier please!!!

Has anyone A\B'd the sound of this thing to a SVT or AD200B? Or should I say do a all tube head vs streamliner shoot out :)

There have been a few clips put up comparing the Streamliner to an SVT, and a few posts by those who own both the Streamliner and the Sadowsky SA200 (which IMO is the closest in tone to the STreamliner).

Depending on how you run either of the amps, and your tone goal, the comparison comments with the SVT range from 'nothing alike' to 'so close as to not matter':p.

Of course, you aren't going to get power tube break-up from the STreamliner, so if you like a big tube amp like the Orange or the SVT in full grind mode, a VT pedal or some other sort of distortion unit through a relatively transparent SS amp like the Markbass LMII/III would probably get you there better.

For me, one who enjoys the sound of a big tube amp run well below the distortion level, the Streamliner is a dream (as you can most likely tell from my clips if you have good phones). It has a lot of that 'feel and give' and 'tube compression' feel to it that I've only experienced with either an all tube amp, or some of the Mesa hybrid executions.

IMO and IME.

I have the AD200b and the Streamliner 900.

The depth and 'push' of the Streamliner, and headroom, is outstanding for a little micro amp!

I will never sell my Orange, because it is unque. Such a different tube breakup, which I much prefer over the SVT CL (plus its MUCH lighter and cheaper in the UK). That Orange grinds like NOTHING else. Set it to clean and it is deep, punchy, and HUGE.

I have not set them side by side for a shootout!
