Genz Benz Streamliner Part 9

Noticed there are a bunch of STLs for sale on TB Classifieds of late.

Has something happened with these amps that so many people are unloading them? Up till now have heard mostly good about them and I'm considering a purchase, so that has me a little curious.

In looking at this (and other STL threads) more closely it seems a lot of the issue is how the STL pairs well with some cabinets and not so well with others.

I would be pairing mine with the old-school Hartke (aluminum cone) cabinets, circa early 90s. Thoughts on that, anyone?

Nothing wrong with the Streamliner.
My main amp right now is a ShuttleMax 9.2, because it's more versatile and can get a lot of biting midrange when I want it.

But for getting the maximum sheer pleasure from the feel of each note, nothing I've owned matches the Streamliner.

For reference, my speaker cabinet is a fEARful 15/6/1.
I think you need to try the amp/speaker combination out to see if you'll like it. Those aluminium cone cabinets were pretty scooped and clanky, weren't they?

you do need to spend some time with the Streamliner. The standard "set it at noon and forget it" may not be the exact tone you want, and there are many other settings that just kill. give it time.

If you want a super clear, clanky tone like GK, this is not the amp for you. Many people bought on hype that because its a good amp it could do anything. Thats not the case. This amp does awesome warmth & if you have a warm bass & a warm cab it wont be a great combo

I use mine with a Hartke HyDrive 410 and it pairs up great. I've been a GK player so the Streamliiner is quite different. Sounds like an old school tube amp. So if your looking for a lightweight head that sounds similiar to an SVT, this is it.

Good insights. Definitely looking for warm and also good "punch" but definitely not the GK sound. I'm actually looking for a lightweight head that comes close sonically to a MB Walkabout... but with more power, a pre/post switchable DI and a price I can afford. My church briefly got a STL for a loaner head and I thought it blew our regular head (a Shuttle) out of the water on sound. And that was through a Hartke 4.5 XL Cab. So that's what got me headed down this path.

I have had a GK 700 RBII for 4 years until I recently replaced it with my GB Streamliner 600. I didn't think it possible as I really liked the GK 700 am but the GB is much much better sounding. Warmer, punchier. Just a nice tone and louder. Love this little thing.

Oh I still have and love my 700RBII. It's not going anywhere, I just was wanting something different. I agree warmer, punchier and the more I fiddle with the knobs on it, the more tones I find I like in it.

FWIW, I bought mine used here on the classifieds for a good price. There are definately deals around here for them.

Cool. My thinking is to run an STL with a Harkte 2x10 cab as a "mini-rig" on main band gigs (DI'd to our P.A. and with IEMs)... and/or in small rooms without support... and then add another 4x10 to the 2x10 for big jobs. I'm thinking the 600 should have plenty of juice for that.

True, but this amp is still versatile. If you lower the bass to about 9, boost the mids at 2.5 to about 3 o'clock or more, boost the treble a bit, set the input volume around 3 or more and gain around 11ish you can get a pretty open, more "clanky" sound. I really think running the input volume around 3 opens the amp up. I also have a 5751 in v1 too. Love this amp.

Do u get clipping with the input volume this high?

I agree, especially with the high gain in, but clear tone isn't it specialty. I often have the bass cut that much , sounds great !

I recently swapped in a JAN Phillips 5751 into V1. I really like the results. It has added some definition to the low end and taken alittle of the gain out, but it still has plenty on tap. I plan on trying a couple of Tung-Sol reissue 12AX7's in V2 and V3. I'd also like to get hold of some vintage RCA 7025's to try across the board in there.

I got to use the 900 with a band last night and needless to say, it sounded stellar. No issues sitting in the mix at all with a passive PBass and Berg mini stack. It fits with the PBass in that classic way that a SVT and PBass pair up. How sweet it is.

Nothing wrong with the Streamliner.
It is my favorite non-all tube head.
Amps tent to run flavor of the month.
Everyone jumps on them, then try something new.
The Fender Bassman 100T is hot now.
Wait six months something else will be hot.
Play what you like.
