Genz Benz Streamliner Pt 7.....

Status
Not open for further replies.
FWIW I love the streamliner through the AE112 stack and the AE410, but did not like it all through the AE212. So the AE212 is gone now and need to know if anyone is diggin' the Streamliner through the GB Neo 112? Uber212 or Neo 212?

This is why im tempted by a shuttle.

Remember, the F500 has dual semi-parametric EQ's. If you dig your F1, you would LOVE the F500. That being said, the Shuttle 9 sounds very good with the 1212L also... much more similar to the F500/F1 than to the Streamliner.

Edit: If you don't mind a slightly larger footprint, the Shuttle Max 9 is a KILLER amp that is 'tight and modern' like your F1, but has massive EQ, the ability to dial in at least a bit of tube tone, and has variable filters like the F1 (versus the IMO relatively useless 'all or nothing' filters on the Shuttle 6 and 9). Another great match with your 1212L IMO,

Love the AE212, but like you, not particularly with the Streamliner. The relaxed upper mids that Jim voiced into that cab, and the bigger low end versus the other AE's works directly against the Streamliner voicing to my ear, and I could never 'fix' that with the Streamliner EQ. +1

With the Shuttle line of amps.... perfect!

Thanks again Ken.

Its good to hear the Shuttle is a bit closer to the F1. I like the F1 (only done 4 gigs with it, and most of those were just one set then swapped over to the STL600) but yes, the F500 is much better specified and would be my first choice if one turns up soon. It felt quite limited at the last gig as i needed to EQ quite a lot and felt something liek the F500, or even the shuttle would have copped better. Maybe even the STL600.

As i love the variable filters on the MB heads the shuttles on or off versions dont really appeal to me as much, but i know i would use the low end and scoop buttons. Ive read that the Shuttle can be a bit lightweight in the low end although ive not played one yet.

The Shuttle 9 is a bit too expensive for me, whatever i do will depend on the money raised by selling the STL600. Ive had an offer of a Shuttle 6.0 with foot switch and gig bag but the guy is away until the end of the month. This gives me a few more gigs to play with the STL600 as i really want it to work.

...The thing is i do hear that meaty, fat full P bass tone from the STL600 and love it, its just that its difficult to get it consistently at all our venues.

...Im going to give it one more go (at least) but im also considering a Shuttle 6.0, and have put the feelers out for a F500. As good as the F1 is i know i would prefer the more SA450 EQ orientated F500, just for that slight 100hz boost i used to use with my old head.

Dave, it sounds like you really ought to give a parametric EQ a whirl. If you only dislike the SL600 in certain rooms, then maybe it's time to get serious about room EQ.

If $$$ are tight, the Empress runs about $200 used, and the little Presonus sometimes comes up on eBay for $100 or less. Either one fits handily in a gig bag, and the Empress in particular is a lifesaver for bad rooms and for recording.

Both offer fewer artifacts than the Sansamp. They also offer more EQ flexibility than either the Sansamp or an F500, and are a lot cheaper than continually GAS'ing for new amps and cabs.

Thanks again Ken.

The Shuttle Max 6 might be the ticket for you. Lower price point than the Max 9, much better feature set and EQ control than the Shuttle 9, and plenty of ooomph to drive your 1212L. It does not have the low end attenuation that the Shuttle 6 has built into its voicing, and it has variable filters like the F1. I wouldn't be surprised if there was someone on TB who would be interested in a direct swap with your Streamliner 6.

Good luck with the search!

Thanks Steve.

I will look in to that unit. As im based in the UK i dont know how hard it will be to track one down, and i expect it will cost a bit more than i can afford right now but its certainly an option i will consider.

I dont actually have GAS, like there isnt anything i really want as such, its just that i might have made a mistake getting the STL600 without trying one. Ive used the same SA450 for the past 4+ years, quite happily for most of them but i just felt it was time for a change and this happened to coincide with me seeing one of the Streamliner threads on here.

I just feel maybe im not getting the best out of the STL600 at the moment and fear that maybe i wont ever settle with it while i still have this cab.
I am looking in to a Barefaced Compact but thats just an idea at the moment.

Thanks for the heads up Ken. I wasnt aware of a Shuttle 6 Max. Ill look in to that one.

just got a call at the music shop. My STM900 will arrive in 5-6 working days. In the next week I will try to couple it with two Berg AE210, stacked both orizzontally and vertically at rehearsal and if this waiting time is correct, even at a loud outdoor rock gig. I'll bring with myself also my trusty beloved T-Funk 550B with its awesome para EQ but I'm curious expecially about the outdoor venue. With no walls and hollow wooden stages it wil be easy to evaluate the pure tone of this stack! :bassist:

I think you will dig it. Quite different than your T-Funk (which is also a wonderful match-up with the AE210 x 2 or 410)... bigger in the low end, more relaxed in the mids, and a more crystal clear, tube driven extended top end. I've again had wonderful luck with my 900 and my AE410 and AE210 on smaller gigs. Let us know!

Who is this guy?????
Haven't seen him around here before....;)

When I first got my STL 900 I was using it with an avatar 212 neo, and was very disappointed with the sound I was getting in the mix. On my local craigslist I saw a bergi ht322 and a epi ul410. I went to one of my local music stores that carried both and a/b them with my stl900 and my ash/maple carvin sb5000. while the ul sounded a bit louder, the bergi made my bass and tone come alive like never before. I called the local seller and bought the ht322 and took it to practice that same day. WOW that cabinet does wonders for the streamliner in the mix, I eq'd flat on the head and bass and was getting the sweetest tone ever. I know the ht322 is a heavy monster at 82 lbs, but small price to pay for the best tone of my 14 years of bass playing, and for only $500 barley used the bergie was an awesome choice. I also just recently purchased a 1990 kubicki x factor thats being set up right now by my tech and cant wait ti hear how she does tomorrow through that rig.

I've found my STL 900 sounds great with the NeoXt212, or the Uber 212, but didn't have great results playing it through my SHuttle 12 ext. But I just picked up a Shuttle 210, and it works great with the Shuttle 12 under it as a mini stack - you just can't play metal with these cabs, but for smaller gigs where I want the creamy tone, it's great.

To the guy having a hard time with consistency from one room to the next - try using the Auralex GRAMMA. It helps isolate the cab from the floor, greatly reduces the coupling effect, and gives you a fairly consistent starting point in each room. I think this will help you alot, and they only cost $50 or so. I NEVER play without mine.

I find the STL has the capabilities I need, but I do have to do things differently. For example, I never considered cutting lows on any other amp, but I do sometimes with the STL, same thing for cranking mids past 3 o'clock... The tone controls act more like passive eq than my other amps.

Thanks Ed.

I actually do use a Gramma pad at all my gigs, and yes, it helps tremendously.

Like you ive never had to cut lows before i got this head. Ive been quite happy with doing this if its needed, but its a new sensation. For me i find cutting the mids helps get the tone im looking for but I guess i do need to push those knobs a lot more and see what i can come up with.

I'm loving the Uber Quad as a standalone cab for my gigs. Very smooth across the board and I don't find myself needing much EQ, maybe a small bump in the low mids. With the GB112 I find myself dialing back some bass and adding a bit of treble and it sounds fantastic. The GK112, which is feather-light, needs the most EQ-ing, but I can still get my sound.

What Ed said... setting the mids @ 600 and cranking them past 3:00, plus cutting the bass to between 8:00 and 9:00 usually does the trick.

Mind you, at a big outdoor gig recently I had to crank the lows to 10:00. Whoa! :hmm:
