Wish all my problems were as hard to solve as this one, he, he!!!!!
The great news is that I'm sold to the examples I heard both on Ed Friedland's and K Jung's clips (Cheers, Ken: I relied on your opinion when I decided upon the Berg stack!)).
Tone is the most important thing and power comes secondary here.

Are you going with the 600 or the 900? I had the same question when I was considering my STM purchase, and I'm glad I listened to those here who recommended I splurge for the 900. I probably could have gotten by with the 600, at least for now, but there was only a $100 difference between the two. I'm thrilled with my 900. It has a TON of headroom, and I rarely find a need to push the master volume past 10:00, but it's nice to know I can if I need to! And the tone is delicious.
Everybody seems to favour the 900, and I can afford the money effort...
Would you say it is efficient at low volume? Now I fear I may run it at such a low master level because of the massive power that it will just not perform the way it should tonewise.
No fear. I use my 900 for living room gigs, acoustic sets, etc., and it performs fine. No loss of tone, no noise issues.
The only giveaway that I'm running a "big block", is the extra-firm low end that high-power amps tend to give. And that's nothing to complain about!
I recorded many soundclips of the STM 900 with various basses but I have major troubles when attempting to upload them as an attachment...Damn! The window tell me that my file exceeds by x Mb that is the total dimension of that file. Files are 1-2 Mb only. Am I the only one that has this kind of problem? Thanks

Those will still be too big. I can't remember the size limit on TB but it's fairly small. Use a site like Soundcloud and share the link on TB
Thanks rodneyat, the size limit, as stated in the attachment windows, is 4,8 MB for an mp3, so my flies simply are rejected for another reason. Thanks for the suggestion, I will try to make a soundcloud account.
Hmmmm...Interesting that you can get it uploaded then. Soundcloud is nice because you don't have to download the MP3, it can just be streamed.

Basses used: Mayones Comodous 5, modded Fender MIM Jazz, Warwick Thumb BO 4.
For each bass I recorded the common situations: PU blended, neck and bridge PU solo'd.
Every clip hosts two takes, the first one with the amp "clean", the second one with the tube preamp slightly pushed. Exceptions are the clip named "Mayones PU bridge" were the above sequence is inverted (tube grit comes first) and the sample "Wick PU blended" that hosts 3 takes, the third obtained by running the gain at full throttle and lowering the treble to 8 o' clock.
I intentionally left the bass knob at noon in all takes, even if I find myself more comfortable with a little cut there, in order to show the natural flat character of the amp's lowend. Sometimes (Mayones) I just boosted at 1 o' clock the 2.5 k.
The bass line is very simple, just to show the sound.

thanks for the replies. just keep in mind that in all those clips I wanted to take a faithful picture of the basic tone of the amp, and decided to run the amp's EQ flat. Believe me, if you tweak the EQ (powerful, actually) in order to match the amp with every instrument's native character, the results are much better. Go figure!
And yes, I used the built-in DI in post mode going straight into my iMac.

First jam session in a rehearsal space. Medium sized room, overdampened wall treatment (almost all the wall surface was treated with professional grade insulating foam), great acoustics, maybe somewhat too dry sounding. Drums, strato guitar (trough my wonderful Victoria 5112), piano, synth, my bass. Used my trusty Fender jazz with Lo-Riders nickel.
At the beginning I hooked the STM 900 to 2 Bergantinos AE 210 cabs, vertically stacked. The sound was huge and loud. In this kind of room there was too much bass and volume, even with low settings of the bass knob. Too much volume means that the cabs were no speaking at the volume at witch were were comfy. In fact I found the AE210 a very lively cab if you throw at it a good amount of watts.
So I used a single vertical AE210 and Bam! I was rewarded with wonderful warm traditional supporting and GROOVY bass tone. I used the amp's EQ flat except for a slight boost of the treble knob. The bass tone was firm and absolutely not boomy or muddy, we performed a groovy funk-rock original tune and the bass part, full of ghost notes and so on, was clear and intelligible, but very punchy in the low-mids that remained solid. The fact that surprised me was how good the low end felt, even with the bass knob at noon. I think that the AE 210 is an awesome tonal match for the Streamliner. By the way, all the players commented how good and punchy the bass sounded, and how good they were able to hear the bass lines.
