Genz Benz Streamliner Pt 7.....

Thank you all very much. Yes, I have seen Kjungs. Yes, I have heard sratas sound clips. Thank you both, they are great. What I would hope for is someone would produce a clip or vid, like Red Planet is talking about. Really calling on that "svt-esque" sound and maybe dirty it up, a touch more. Maybe even use a pick? (dodging rotten veggies being chucked :P) Everything that has been posted, has been seen and greatly appreciated. I am hoping that more will be produced, that shows the head in a different light?

Anything anybody takes the time to do, I will listen to and be very appreciative of what they did. Thank you all again.

+1 I wouldn't have a clue on playing in that style or with a pick. I will tell you that I had a buddy over who loves the pick and grindy tone (Squire, John Wetton, etc.), and he didn't dig the overdriven tone of the Streamliner much. I guess what I learned is that there are SO many tonal variations in overdriven tones (Orange, SVT, HiWatt, etc., etc.) that it becomes quite a personal thing. He didnt' dig the tubetone of the TC amp either.

My buddy digs the SVT grind, and this head will not do that. His VT pedal through a clean solid state sound source (in this case, my MB F500) did a much better job of generating a variety of grind and grit, from mild overdrive to chain saw.

Just one data point though. IMO, the Streamliner is great at uber tubey fat and warm. Not sure about the super overdriven tone though (again, based on hanging with a guy who knows a lot about that sort of vibe).

I love the overdriven tone of the 900. I don't use it much, but it sounds great when I need the DIRT. This amp is quite versatile. dialed the mids from 3 to 12:00 on a gig yesterday and the warmth was ridiculous. Bass between 10:00 to 11:00. Treble 12:00 :bassist:

All the good guitarists I know, consider a tube amp to be an essential part of their tone arsenal. Yet every single one, owns multiple solid-state overdrive and/or fuzz pedals. The demand is so great, that there are new pedals coming out every week.

Bass players are no different. How many guys on TB own an SVT or a Mesa M9, and still put pedals in front of them?

IMO/IME, to a true distortion fan, even a term like "SVT grind" is so vague as to be meaningless. Do you mean the sound of an SVT with the bright switch on or off? Wide open, or just starting to break up? Treble dimed or not?

At the end of the day, if you're really picky about distorted sounds, you've got to choose the best amp to deliver your basic tone (which may or may not be a Streamliner), and then add pedals to provide the secret sauce.

+1 This is what I was trying to communicate.

And yes, even with that single VT pedal which I guess is meant to mimic the various stages of overdrive and EQ of an SVT head cranked, he had massively different 'grindy' tones in there... chain saw upper mids on one preset, fat, distorted grunt on another, warmth with just a touch of break-up when digging in with a pick, and mid-mid snarl on another. Pretty cool.

Still i'm so happy you won't crash my party...besides, we'll have to see how customs officer behave. I calculated 26% to avoid risks...and there's the gigbag...yet -to be honest- I don't think I can get as low as to your price.

when placing the order for my STM, i was afraid there was something wrong with the proposed deal (in particular I thought that the shop took the order for a 600, or a Shuttle), and asked 3 times a confirmation of the model, etc. There was nothing wrong, simply they sold me a wonderful STM900 at an incredible price. If I figure the + 30-40 % italian douane fees, the + 20 % IVA (tax) I realize that, even with the favourable euro/dollar exchange rate, I made an awesome deal...

The Streamliner 900 cops a wonderful SVT tone. Plug it into an 8x10. For overdrive it's best to use a passive Fender and roll back the bass tone control just a smidge. :hyper::bassist:

You guys are all great thank you. Kjung great info. Steve_rolfeca great info too. Except when I used my Mesa Buster, I plugged in direct, it sounded awesome. In the past when I used a solid state Ampeg, my Laney or Hartke, I did have distortion pedals. In the future I am looking to probably buy the Ashdown Lomenzo pedal or the VT. I would like an EBS valve but it's just too much and the tones I heard from the Ashdown and VT came very close to the "tube" sound.

But Steve, your are correct in when you just need a wee bit more grit with less fuzz. Sometimes when you want a tighter distortion tone (especially in a small amount), you can't get that with a tube head alone and need to go to your bag of tricks.

Sounds like Michael Anthony on the first VH record. Yes, Rush, a slightly toned down Billy Sheehan. Even a slightly grittier Jimmy Bain. That's the sound I am looking for. With a bit of emphasis on the mids and lows. Again, you guys are great.

I have pretty much used the STM 900 for everything since it's arrival (I still love my M6 though). I have used it with a single AE112 for smaller stuff and the AE112 Stack or AE410 for larger stuff and really dig the tone through those cabs. Use the DI to the board all the time. No complaints. I have used the DI post in the studio several times as well and love it. I'll try to get some recordings up after the are mastered. Nothing special, but you can get a flavor of the tone.

I will try to post some pictures of the inside of the STM900. I took the shots when testing different tubes. In particular I tested a GT 12AX7A, A Sylvania, a National, all old tubes coming from a high-end studio console that has been retired. All the changes produced well discernable results, but, in all honesty, the sound I digged more was the stock one...

Got my 900 this week and it really is a wonder to hear these sounds coming from such a lightweight amp. It will spend it's time going through a Berg AE 1X12 and a Schroeder BMF 2X15. As I write this I realize I have only played my Elrick through it so tomorrow out comes the '69 Precision, G&L Jazz, and the Birdsong.
