Well, I am alive to tell the tale, I have swapped the V1 tube for the Phillips, I can only try at house levels but it has tamed the bass a bit, sounds good, I have a band practice tomorrow night so will report my findings wednesday .

Just so you know. Preamp tubes never need external biasing. Only Power tubes. These amp have a Class D solid state Power output and no power tubes.

The main thing I noticed was less distortion when I selected the extra gain button and cranked the gain and bass eq to max, the bottom was cleaner and less broken up, it was smoother, looking forward to tonight .

Yep, I think it still has plenty of Gain on tap, just have to turn the knob a bit more!
On another note, I just installed a couple of RCA 7025's in V2 and V3. At home levels I'm not really hearing a big difference. I'll see what I think after this weekends gig.
My newly V1`d Streamliner 900 had a good session last night 
I am very pleased with the Phillips JAN 5751 in V1, it has tamed the amount of gain as predicted to a level where I can use the bass EQ more without worrying about possible bassiness or break-up, not that there was a major problem with it, there seems to be more usable headroom available, there is still some nice tube break-up but its smoother and not so full on, metal fans would be dissapointed !, I ended up with the following settings;
Gain button - selected
Gain - 2 0 clock
Volume - 2 o clock
Bass 12 o clock
Middle - maxxd
Freq - 2.5K
Treble - 12 0 clock
Master to taste
This set up gave a really rich, full and warm tone with clean smooth headroom way above what my ears can take, I could not have previously used the bass at 12 o clock with the OEM tube in V1 with these gain/volume settings so in my situation this mod is perfect

That's great! I'm glad you liked the swap. I found the exact same thing with it. I think the amp still has plenty of gain on tap, I just really like how it cleans up the bottom end of the amp. If you are only going to change one tube, that is the one to change.
I'll find out this weekend if I like the 7025's I put in V2 & 3. Too hard to tell in the house how it's responding.

I just got a 5751, Sovtek LPS, and a JJ 12AT7. I had stolen the 12AT7 from my markbass compressore and had messed with it in V1 and V2, I like what it did to the tone in both. Does anybody have any suggestions for starting positions for these tubes (I still have the stock JJ and Rubys too). One 12AT7 will go back in the compressore.

I have been trying a number of tubes in the streamliner all week. And because of that, and my sense of duty to the science and our discussion here, I have probably spent over $200 on tubes doing it!
Messing with tubes has become a preferred method of blowing and afternoon. I hope I have learned something...
I first tried what was lying around in my tube box: Mesa, Electro-Harmonix, JAN Philips 5751, Tung Sol; the stock tubes in my STM600 were v1- JJ ecc83, v2,3 Ruby Select. Then I bought a Groove Tubes Silver 5751, Sovtek 12ax7-LPS, Tube Amp Doctor 12ax7, and a JAN 12AT7 (GE).
V1 my favorites in the V1 are the JAN phlips 5751 and the Mullard 12at7 (new old stock). The 5751 is a very good choice, offering great color, clarity and control without a lot of gain loss from a 12ax7. The Mullard is similar, with a fuller sound, and a bit darker. I am working with the Mullard for now. I may buy a couple more and try one in the V2, V3.
V2 my favorite in the V2 is the JJ- it sizzles the highs and has a smooth rich fat low. The EH tubes offered a nice open sound here, which may be ideal for Jazz/single coil players. I found that there are several tubes that are fine-to-great in the bass category, but only the JJ offered the treble sound I want.
V3 my favorite in the V3 is the JAN 12AT7- great clarity and color, without too much of the in-your-face-tube coloring (that I also like). My other fave in this slot is the Tung Sol, which offers more punch and stab and tube edge and color. I want a tube here that offers clarity cleanly, not distorted or muddy sound.
what I thought of the other tubes:
bear in mind that this is my experience and opinion based on these tubes, my amp, my speaker, and my 'sound concept.' Plus, as so many of us point out, it is not easy to put sound into words.

- the Tube Amp Doctor tube I find unremarkable, and don't recommend. It is not much different than the Ruby Select tubes that came with my Streamliner.
- the Sovtek LPS sounds good, but is a bit noisier than I want. It's definitely high gain with a punchy sound-it sounds like the highest gain of all my tubes. I prefer the Tung Sol for this type of sound, color, and gain.
- The Mesa is also good, but I think a guitarist would like it more than I do for bass. It's a bit hairy and full and punchy, but a bit bright and aggressive, too. I prefer the Tung Sol for this type of sound, which offers more clarity and vocal color.
- The 5751 Groove Tubes Silver was a disappointment, but also I think good for guitarists. It wasn't very full or dark, and seemed to offer that shimmery guitar distortion- which I don't want or need.
- The Mullard is a very rich and full sound, but not very sparkly up top. I am using it in V1 at the moment, with pleasure. I understand why these things are legendary- but I will say I was surprised that it is not my favorite in the V2 or V3. Perhaps if I had 3 of them...
- The JJ is my favorite for the Treble/Hi sound- it is the only one I have tried that gives me the sizzly highs without also stabbing my eardrums with the 3kHz-5kHz. Plus its bass is huge and rich. I keep trying other tubes and coming back to the JJ for V2. It is also perfectly acceptable in the V3 slot, though I prefer a tube with more vocal quality and brightness there.

Swapped a JJ ECC83S, JJ ECC81, Phillips JAN NOS and my go to Tung Sol in V2.
Liked the JJ ECC83S best. It removed a bit of harshness on the top end and fattened up the bottom. Rolled the bass knob back to a little over 9 and the sound was smooth, even and kinda creamy.

has anyone plotted the frequency response of the STL with the 5751 in V1?..would be interesting to see if the amount of bass has been reduced realtive to mid/high, or whether it is simply better controlled..

what is it you like about the Tung Sol in V2? I admit I tried it there, but I didn't make notes. I seem to recall it was nice in the bass category, but spanky up top. That's why I chose the JJ.

The JJ began to sound a bit less defined and it occurred to me that what sounds perfect in a living room can get lost on a bandstand. Also I find the Tung Sol has more harmonic content that really pops out, for example, when I play Db on my G string, and I like that.
I can dig it. I, too, used that combo with great satisfaction. Then I went and started slapping a bunch- something that rarely happens outside my basement!- and determined the JJ was the one for that. So here I am with the perfect 10x20' bassment sound, slapping myself happy.
Full disclosure- I only have used only 4 of the screws in the lid of the amp to enable faster tube tweaking in the future.

Well I tried a Tungsol Reissue 12AX7 in my Streamliner 600 in V1 position (did not try V2 or V3 because Tech support told me those positions were cathode follower and not to use it there). In the end I did not care for it as it made the amp darker sounding so I went back with the original stock tube as I did before. I will stick to the stock tubes where possible.
This may b off topic but i was playing through my sl900 last night and it just made a terrible noise and the limiter light was on in the middle of a song. The only way to stop it was turn amp off......this happend twice but all my settings were normal and not near pushing the limits. This amp is brand new .....what could be the problem?? Any help??
