Genz Cab Love

Well. Even though they have the best amps in the business (IMO), and their customer service is top notch, I sold my NeoX 212T while keeping my 3 GB amp heads. But, I also sold my Aguilar and Peavey cabs. I only use what I have built.

We hear so many accolades about Genz amps. What about their cabs? Is it that they face so much competition from cab-only companies, e.g. Bergantino, that keeps their line out of limelight?

I've tried a Uber 410 and own a less-frequently-talked 410-XB3. I love them both for what they are. Loud and punchy. Uber for tight lows while the XB3 for the massive, wide lows.

With the Shuttle 6.0, I can make the XB3 to be warm and thumpy, to tight and punchy. Very versatile, imo.

Haven't had a chance to try out one of the Uber models but I did get to test out a 12.2 with a XB3 410 and was absolutly stunned with the huge sound it put out.

I use pretty much only Genz Benz heads, including the combos like the 3.0-8T which is an incredibly useful little amp. However, I really like a Schroeder cab that I have - it's the 1212 with one speaker diagonal. Genz doesn't have the diagonal speaker feature so far as I know, and it makes for an extremely compact 1212 with great sound. I put the Shuttle 6.0 through that cab and it's all i need for bar type gigs.

I'm not playing any place large enough right now to use a 4x10 but I'd like to try one of the Genzes that have been mentioned on this thread.

My impression was the same. The XB3 has *huge* bottom, the opposite of the tight sounding Uber. It's the go-to cab for massive lows and remain reasonably punchy. Can sound "vintage" with proper dialing in the low-mids, imo.

The Uber 212 is arranged diagonally in a compact 410 box. Much heavier than the Schroeder though. Genz's Uber line sports Neo drivers but are generally heavier than others' Neo cabs. Something to do with their plywood and construction. Very sturdy construction, I might add.

Granted I don't have access to Bergantino's or other boutique cabs here, I don't think Genz's are lacking in their build and tone quality.

When I tried it in the store, I thought the XB-3 had a real tight low end compared to the Uber 410 that day, suppose I might be recalling wrong. Then again, trying gear at stores is not the best way to surmise what cabs/heads/basses can do in the real world.

I had just sold my Eden 410XLT, 4 ohm when I got my STM-900. I loved the 410XLT with Markbass F1 head + 55-02D in a funk/disco band I was in at that time. After I got my UL410's I got rid of the Eden cab due to the weight. But I wish I coulda tried the STM-900 with the Eden cab; mighta not bought those two UL410s for my Markbass heads, LMII/F1, which work awesome together.

Now I'm in a couple blues/R&B bands where I get alot use of my 900 head w/P5 or Jobo 5 basses'. I was thinking the XB-3 cab would match up well with the STM-900 kinda like it might with a 410XLT, course, I could be wrong. One thing for sure, I have not had luck yet with the STM-900/UL410 cab rig; esp with my P5 w/flats, which is the primary rig right now.

I very recently moved from my long time Eden rig to a Shuttle Max 9.2 sitting on top of a single Über Quad and I could not be more pleased with the cab. I was looking for a more monitor like sound with FULL range capabilities and the Über Quad with its 1-12", 2-8" and tweeter really fills that requirement. It has a very solid low end as to be expected with the mighty 12" but the best part are the way the twin 8" drivers handle the mids with simply jaw dropping clarity. All the crossover points are done flawlessly so there are simply no volume changes from the lowest B all the way up ...... I just now need to find a deal on a second Quad.....!

Long time NeoX 212 user here. Purchased my first one new around 2002. Sold it around 2005 and immediately regretted it. Got another one (new) in early 2006 and never looked back. For me, the cab is versatile via its ability to respond to EQ and allows whatever bass & amp connected to it to shine through. I average between 60-70 gigs a year, mostly small/medium bars and it always holds its own. The only time I need FOH support is one really big room I play just a few times a year and outdoors.

For most gigs: USA Mill 5 > Promethean micro head (small bump @ 50, some cut @ 800) > NeoX 212 w/Teeter off = what I call my "Eagles" tone. Smooth, round, and tight.

For heavier louder stuff ala my "AC/DC" tone: USA Mill 5 > DigiTech BP200 (10 patches built around the Ashdown setting) > Fender Bassman 150 (bumps @ 80, 450 & 800) > Crown CE1000 > NeoX 212 w/T @ 25% = 3X12 vertical array pushing a total of 1250w for gooey, growly, crunchy hard rock goodness :D

I have yet to get the NeoX 212 to fart out.

Hey just wondering if anyone tried 2x Neox12's instead of the Neox 212.Did a search and didnt come up with much and havent really followed it.

IIRC, there was a thread a year or two ago comparing 2XNeox 112 vs Neox 212. The consensus was that 2X112 coupled together created more (actual/perceived?) low end at low to moderate volumes. Apparently the combined internal volume of the two 112's was slightly greater than the single 212.

Also, the other trade off was modular (2X112) vs convenience (1 cab solution) vs total cost. This was in the same time frame as discussions about vertical arrays were going on. So the winner was NeoX 212 + 112 = bad a$$ ;)

I recall Fretlessboy saying that a pair of Neox112T have a bit more low end going on than the Neox212T with the 212 being a bit more 'balanced' sounding, but one man's 'balanced' is another man's 'wimpy thang'.

I'm GAS'in for a Neox212T big time!!!

Thanks everyone-I did a search and didnt find that.Guess I didnt look hard enough.

Any word as to how a single neox12 worked on a small gig.Ive never used a 12 that would cut it.I know it is volume dependent-But Im not sure Id even attempt it.

Depends on the band. My NeoX 212T has never broken a sweat covering our gigs. Not even close. I strongly suspect a 112 would be fine. I've said it before: I was thinking of two 1x12s and went for a 2x12 because it was a lot cheaper, it would transport easier than two 1x12's and I figured I'd always bring the second cab "just in case" anyway.

I love the 212T's form factor - one rack width with kick and roll wheels. Fits through doorways easily and you can roll it if you want to. It's just a little too short, but it's definitely doable.

KO

I currently use an Uber 212 and Uber 410 in my live rig. Had a 410XB2 and regret selling it. My main gig is a doubling thing. I find I love the Uber212 for electric only gigs, but not as much for upright only gigs...thinking of getting a NeoX 212 for smallish, upright only gigs as I've heard the mid voicing is more upright friendly. I had assumed I would put the 410 on top of the 212 for the bigger gigs, but the reverse turned out to sound way better, to me on upright gigs. So with the Uber 212 only used for electric gigs, I am in the market for a second cab to pair with my Uber 410 for large upright gigs...toying with a few options;

NEOX 212 on top of the Uber 410?
Two Uber 410's?
Uber Quad on top of the 410?
Uber 410 on top of a 410 XB3?

I play a SM 12.0, btw. Sometimes find my self wanting 'different' lows....all the Ubers have great low, lows...looking for a more 'visceral' old school low end for the loud gigs, but still want that great GB articulation.
