Genzler 4 on the Floor

I'm loving the sounds and feel of my 4OTF. Cheers to the Genzler team for making this lovely box.

One thing I've noticed, if I use the HPF, there's a noticeable reduction in bass when enabled vs disabled. It's most noticeable when I'm using an equal amount of drive and clean blend. I've been boosting the bass on my amp's EQ to compensate. Then if I turn it off I need to dial the bass back down. (I guess this all makes sense in hindsight)

ATM I'm using it as an always on pedal, so not a big deal, but I'm curious how others are compensating for this. If you've got tips for an amateur like me, I'm all ears.

What happens when you blend in more clean? Balance..

Congrats on a great pedal! I was never a distortion person (other than Mel Schacher--Grand Funk), but this being overdrive is one thing I wish I had all my decades of playing. Slow learner I suppose. On for me about 90-95% of the time. As for what you are saying, I think I get what you are saying, but am not certain. Can you post of pic of your settings. Depending on what you do with the filters, it obviously will reduce lows (or highs), so maybe a pic will help. I personally leave all the lows fully present. What I experience when engaged is more mids and compression and that may make the lows seems to go away to some extent. Not much, but it's a tighter more balanced tone you might say that I hear.

I think you got it.
1) Dirty top/clean bottom: increase high pass and boost clean bass with separate EQ.
2) Dirty top/dirty bottom: lower high pass and flatten EQ.
3) Room correction for boomy or muddy bass: just increase high pass slightly until bass sounds clearer--a little dab'll do yah.

The HPF reduces the extreme lows going into the overdrive engine. The more clockwise the control, the higher the LF rolloff begins. Try turning the HPF down (CCW) a little bit.

I do really like how the HPF cleans up the bottom, as long as I EQ a touch of bass back in. i.e. HPF around noon. So I'll probably mostly stick with that and use this as an always on pedal.

I'm going to experiment with running another overdrive before/after it, and use that as something to kick on/off.

I don't own Genzler 4OTF..but I am using Broughton FFXL and another overdrive for similar setup...

I mix clean full range signal with overdriven mids. When I do that, I am using J-J configuration on my Fender Dimension bass. The point is that the signal from my bass is scooped (the mids are decreased). I add overdriven mids by setting the HPF and LPF on the effect channel at approx. 200Hz and 2kHz.

That way, I am adding the missing mids to my originally scooped tone. I am able to struck balance between various frequencies using the level control on the effect channel. Furthermore, I have EQ pedal placed down the signal chain so I am able either cut mids or boost some lows...

You should be able to achieve similar result with the Genzler pedal by setting HPF CW and LPF at 9 o'clock.

I recently added a 4 on the Floor to my Magellan Pre and I believe I have found what I've been looking for! I like to keep things really simple and I wanted just a tiny bit of drive (I usually prefer clean but wanted to experiment with a little more grit).

When I bought it I thought, well I'm only going to use Gear 1 since I wanted a very subtle drive. But yesterday at church I used the Magellan Pre with the 4OTF and went with Gear 2, Drive at 12:00. It was perfect. This pedal is now going to be "always on"!

I didn't look into every overdrive on the market. Recently I bought a more expensive preamp with a classic tubey drive but it ultimately didn't work for me and I sent it back. I knew that I liked Genzler products (started with the Magellan 350 head, Bass Array cabs to the Magellan 800 and Pre) and liked Nate Navarro's demo. I'm still learning the ins and outs of it but this pedal combination can be my main setup from now on!

Apologies if I'm gushing but it really is a Goldilocks overdrive for me! Thank you Jeff Genzler (and Scott) and agedhorse!

Cool! I'll probably experiment with Gear 3 (and 4 ). I agree, and as for me I can find distorted tones fatiguing to my ear but not with this pedal!

that is an intriguing comment. I would consider the different channels as being voiced differently, so it's really clear that my definition is askew. So I thought I'd ask you:

The different gears have different textures and dynamics, generate different natural harmonics, but there's no eq, no voicing filters, no artifical alterations to the tone other than what the different harmonics bring to the table.

The HPF affects the signal into the overdrive engine to allow tailoring the lowest fundamental and thus the harmonics generated (helps deal with low and low mid build-up depending on the bass and technique) while the LPF affects the signal out of the overdrive engine which helps reduce the high harmonics if desired for additional smoothness.

The clean signal path blend retains the dynamics and the natural tone/feel of the bass and amp, blending different ratios of clean to overdrive paths can give a very natural tone and feel. It's an essential part of generating a wide variety of overdrive types/styles.

I have three pedals that are must haves: My very old Phase 90, BBE Sonic Stomp (always on) and the 4OTF (on most of the time). Would never leave home without them.

One thing I think would be useful, would be an additional LPF, that's applied to the CLEAN side, as a LPF'd clean can blend much better with a dirty signal than a full range clean.
Also, maybe a bit of compression that can be applied to the clean side.

I just picked up a Magellan Pre and right off the bat I really like the way the 4OTF works with the Curve B contour (with the rest of the EQ pretty flat). Looking forward to finding more tasty combinations for the amp-less/IEM pedal board. Tuner--> 4OTF--> Magellan Pre has nearly everything I'm looking for (except the delay and trem for "One of These Days")
