very excited to try the new head. really hoping it lives up to the hype, i've been so thrilled with my old markbass head for nearly 10 years now it's hard to immagine being satisfied with something else... time will tell..

Oh lawdy, you're going to love the Magellan. I had a Markbass SA450 before my Shuttle, and the MG800 slays them both.

so i've been using my markbass SD800 ever since markbass was a hip new thing on the market

recently the DI has been acting up and making noice when the cable is moved. a called a friend to ask if he knew where to get it replaced, and when he heard how old the amp i'm using was, he insisted i try one of these or grab a used shuttle 9.2

i was pleased to see that these are not only highly praised, but also pretty damn affordable brand-spankin-new. i've played the array cab and was very pleased - so i went ahead and ordered a magellan head along with a bag.

has anyone compared a magellan head directly to a markbass head? thoughts?

part of me wants to repair the markbass... it's been a hell of a rig for a long time... but perhaps it's time for an upgrade.

either way i'll post thoughts once i get it. really have my fingers crossed that i like this more than my old head. the 2.67 ohms and built in drive are a big deal for me.

If it were me , I'd buy the MG800, repair the Markbass and keep it as a backup. You can never be too prepared. Especially if you gig a lot.

A good friend of mine had problems with his Markbass head while my Genz Benz amps never faltered. This is not a statistically valid sample but nevertheless is this just coincidence? I would also suggest you get yourself a Magellan for long-term reliability. That is what I have done now I have started gigging again.

Get the old mark fixed up and make one of your best/neediest students a great deal. Just my opinion...

By the way, since there are BassArray owners in this thread, I have to ask-- how do these cabs handle overdrive, fuzz, and distortion?

Does well with my Barbsrshop and Grizzly

I have been using Markbass heads for over ten years and never had a single problem with them

To follow up on the questions about how the Bass Array cabs handle distorted tones, this is one place where the small paper cone drivers are exceptional in their clarity and smoothness. They reproduce these heavily distorted signals even better than a guitar speaker might because of their size and the array design. So many times these tones can feel like they're "stuck in the box" in the bass instrument world and with the Bass Array design the definition and harmonic content are very detailed, natural and projected forward.
Using a compression tweeter in a more conventional design can be like finger-nails on a chalk board under these conditions.

I'm now envisioning a "Rocker's Dream Rig" consisting of a 400W tube head atop a stack of 4 BA210-3's!

I think 4 stacked would/could be "sonic destruction", --- not trying to talk you out of anything.
I will say that using 2 of them is way more than your average 4 x 10 cab would be. Combining the coupling of the four 10"s and dual Array columns is a powerful rig by reports from testers in the field.

The 210-3BA has some serious volume. Definitely give one a try before assuming that you will need a stack of two. This is not your father's 2x10.
