The Synergy that i had going with the bass, the magellan and cabs just nailed it. I wasn't even looking for what wound up finding.. . Can't explain it but it inspired me ....
Anyone that may think for a second that this new run of class D amp can't do a aggressive (ala ZZ, Mountain, Cream ) hard rock blues type gig is mistaking. The MG800 and Uber 115s slammed. I hope a can repeat that synergy again. Was it Just one of those run of dates ? or is this repeatable?

Also, The amp passed the heat test without failure. I was going to use 3 cabs but i found i didn't really need it..
I ran it at 4 Ω but we sound checked for an hour in almost 100 degree humid TX, LA border 1PM baking sun HEAT.. Amp just sounded fantastic. Showtime was 8 PM. a whole lot cooler then.

Hey Kirk. Glad the right hit the spot for you on this run.
BTW the thermal management of the Magellan is exceptional -- always staying ahead of the thermal curve within the amplifier module, so there should not be any issues, even in damn hot Texas.

got my magellan today

i only had around an hour to use it, mostly was comparing it to my beloved markbass SD800.

some first impressions:

this is a really nice head that i'm pleased with. admittedly, i had so little time with it and was only playing by myself at moderately low volumes in a small awful sounding carpeted room - so i haven't really seen what it can do.

the coltrols are really simple to use, and after 5 minutes with it i feel 100% as comfortable adjusting it as i am with the markbass head i've had for years. personally i found contour B to not be of much use, the low end loss turned me off. contour A however i feel like i would always use somewhere in the 9-10 o'clock area, combined with a little EQ - bass boosted, treble cut just a little. i was very pleased with the drive settings for "always on" low-mid gain sounds, and would be happy to use that rather than lug around the extra effort to use a VT bass when i want "that." (though i would NOT say this drive can do what the VT can do- but the convenience wins here, and it's not trying to do that anyway).

how it stood up to my markbass head is a whole other matter. as far as round one, initial testing, im still leaning towards the markbass. the magellan has such amazing clarity to the top end, but it just doesn't have that same authority to the low end that the MB head does. the MB head (though they're both 800 watts) has noticably more headroom, but that really doesn't matter since i would never be even close to topping out the magellan anyway. the 2.67 ohm option is really cool and im very happy to see it, but in the nearly 10 years i've had my markbass i've never needed to add more cabinets to my rig (though maybe thats just because i knew i couldnt?)

looking forward to more with this amp. another thing i wanted to be sure to mention is that i really like the genzler gigbag for it, definitely worth the extra money.

will post more thoughts as i have them - is anyone else comming to the magellan from a markbass? thoughts?

Interesting. When you checked which one had more headroom what did you base that on? Just curious because from what I understand the MB heads get to peak volume a lot faster whereas the Genz amps have a slower tapper to their controls.
I think more than simply being able to use 3 cabinets the benefit of the 2.67 is being able to mix a 4 and 8 ohm cab if needed. Of course, being able to go with 3 12" 8 ohm cabs is pretty awesome too.

good point - i wasn't maxing either amp out - but in the less-than halfway range, that was the impression.. like i said.. doesn't matter since i've never pushed the MB head past around 10 o'clock, and have done all sorts of small medium and large rooms with it.

Glad your enjoying your initial impressions of the Magellan 800. It is important to keep in mind when comparing 2 different amplifiers and their outputs, you really can't compare them by knob position as individual amp gain structures and pot tapers will have completely different outputs at identical knob settings.
There's a lot of discussion about these comparisons.

yes - tapers matter, i overlooked that.. my mistake! i'll repeat again that both amps are plenty powerful and headroom is not an issue.

i spoke with my buddy Mike Frost yesterday about settings. he had a lot of helpful ideas for me to try, i'm gonna go ahead and just use the genzler on my next few gigs. mike had a lot of positive things to say about his new genzler rig, and if anyone knows bass gear its that guy.

looking forward to trying it out some more tomorrow (rehearsal in the morning, gig at night, two different bands)

Mike Frost from Long Island? If it is that same Mike. I know him from way back.. I lived in Lindenhurst and Brooklyn... I think i had him cover gigs for me when i went out of town.. Great player.. He most likely knows our friend Danny Miranda too
