I agree with the above statement re: BA cabs and distortion. In short, they sound WAY better than distortion coming through one of my cabs with tweeters (including my NX2-212T). Not as harsh sounding, more like distortion through a guitar amp.
Any chance of a BA210-3 vs BA12-3 demo to compare the difference in voicing between the two?

I have a pair of BA12-3s, and I really enjoy the way it handles all of my fuzz, distortion and synth effects. The cabinets (especially in concert with the MG800) are very articulate while sounding nice and beefy. For mids and high-end, it's a little bit different than how a regular tweeter sounds, but to my ear it emphasizes the frequencies of the distortion which are musical and pleasant while minimizing the shrillness which often accompanies a bell tweeter.

Overall, I would say the distortion ends up sounding more integrated into the overall tone, and more musical.

That's good to hear, because I'm a player who loves some Geezer & Lemmy, and have yet to find a 2-way cab that didn't agitate me into defeating the tweeter within seconds.

The BA210-3 is officially in my top 5 for new cab consideration.

By the way, since there are BassArray owners in this thread, I have to ask-- how do these cabs handle overdrive, fuzz, and distortion?

Very well, IME. I play overdrive, fuzz, distortion, octaves, and synth effects through mine, and they all work great with the Bass Arrays.

We knew going in with this design that this question would be asked and certainly you can't hurt anything by using both styles of cabs together. My personal recommendation is to keep apples to apples.
I have played the BA12-3 on top of the BA210-3 and lived to talk about it, though. :bassist:

+1

Well. ...all this is no help what so ever! I'm a 15" guy! ! :crying::crying: :woot:

You need to try a Bass Array 12-3. You won't miss your 15"

Sorry I can't offer you guys a video as these were still Classified UFO-Ware when I tried them. I did demo the two side by side. Here is my take:

The appeal for me about the 12-3 was that it was a VERY small format cab (for me.. coming from 610's and "Nearful" 15156's) that went VERY deep but still provided sufficient overall amplitude and really even response in the mids. Many 112's to my ears are "Bloomy" ... meaning there was a pronounced lack of information in the midrange and upper midrange or even "Boomy" .... meaning the combination of driver selection and porting design made the cabinet sound like a wet mattress. IME the smaller and lighter a cabinet they try to squash a single hi-excursion 12" into, the worse these problems become... but the Bass Array 12-3 was a "Tight" as anyone could ever expect from a ported 12" while still being broad and present in the low-low bass, and the crossover and 3" drivers made the cabinet far more Balanced than the competition, by a long shot.

The Bass Array 10-3 is an entirely different animal. With the exception of the excellent xover and the very balanced nature of the cabinet in terms of midrange, it couldn't be more different. It's a viciously punchy cabinet, and goes as deep as any other 10" cab I've ever heard. It's also CRAZY loud. The problem I've always had with mid-size cabs is that, when pushing higher volumes... only the midrange gets louder as I turn up... the "balance" goes away as the cabinet is no longer able to reproduce the lowest frequencies adequately. Not so here. The comparatively very low Xover point allows the 10's to really put out in the 100hz-220hz range.... I dunno about you, but sounding great in that range is the biggest game there is where I hunt. Being balanced and articulate in the mids to hi-mids is the bonus you usually cant get in the same cab. But the new Bass Array delivers.

Here are a few clips of my band jamming with some different types of fuzz and distortions on bass. These were all recorded with my MG800 through a pair of BA12-3 cabs. I'm also playing a Fender American Deluxe Dimension HH and a number of different pedals, etc. I also have all of these effects split with a clean channel through a Badger Schism.

Obviously it goes without saying that these are copyright materials :)

Keep in mind these are roughish jam recordings of mostly unfinished songs, mostly sans-vocals or with me / the guitar player doing vocals badly :)

Blinding Lights: On this I am using an Ibanez SB-7 Bass Synth pedal through the MG800 Drive channel, as well as my Empress Compressor just for a bit of tone enhancement.

Paralyzed: On this I am using a Polish Love OD pedal and an EHX Small Clone through the MG800 clean channel on Contour B (I think).

Run to Freedom: On this I am using the SB-7 on auto-wah setting along with the Small Clone, and I have an MXR Bass Octave Deluxe on my second f/x loop. This is running through the MG800 Drive channel.

Meaningless: This is straight up MG800 Drive channel with a bit of compression.

I have the mg800 arriving tomorrow.
Very exited.
Quick question to those more knowledgeable than me on this subject.
Soo, I can use 3 x 8ohm cabs,
I can use 1 x 4ohm cab and 1 x 8ohm cab,
Can I use 2 x 4ohm cabs? or is that not a good idea seeing as it only goes down to 2.67 ohms and not 2ohms?
Cheers. :-)

You've got it right :) 2 x 4-Ohm cabs is a no-no, but the other configurations will work. You may be able to run 2 4s at a low volume for some period of time, but it's a question of heat and how the impedance varies over the frequency spectrum and how you're playing. The amp is not rated for continuous use under 2.67 Ohms :)

Two cabs would bring it down to which is below the safe zone and MIN load of 2.67Ω.. 1 x 8 Ω plus 1 x 4 Ω are going to be OK ......... OR 3 x cabs will be fine.. I think it will explain this in the manual.

Great thanks :-) just wanted to check. I like experimenting but don't like breaking things :-)

Found this in the Online manual

SPEAKER OUTPUTS – The MAGELLAN™ 800 provides two Neutrik Speak-On™ connectors (wired 1+/1-). The speaker jacks are paralleled. The minimum speaker load is 2.67 ohms. Do not ground either the “+” or the “-” outputs.

IMPEDANCE SELECTOR SWITCH -- The design of the MAGELLAN™ 800 incorporates a robust power section along with exceptional thermal management allowing for operation down to 2.67 ohms. This gives greater versatility when connecting different speaker cabinet configurations. Set this switch as follows:

IMPEDANCE OPTIONS • 4 / 8 OHM selection: 1 x 8 ohm cabinet, OR 2 x 8 ohm cabinets, OR 1 x 4 ohm cabinet. • 2.67 OHM selection: 3 x 8 ohm cabinets, OR 1 x 8 ohm cabinet + 1 x 4 ohm cabinet.

IMPORTANT – The IMPEDANCE SELECTOR SWITCH position must match the total speaker impedance used.

@svtb15 's info on setting the impedance switch to the correct load is very important to keep in mind

so i've been using my markbass SD800 ever since markbass was a hip new thing on the market

recently the DI has been acting up and making noice when the cable is moved. a called a friend to ask if he knew where to get it replaced, and when he heard how old the amp i'm using was, he insisted i try one of these or grab a used shuttle 9.2

i was pleased to see that these are not only highly praised, but also pretty damn affordable brand-spankin-new. i've played the array cab and was very pleased - so i went ahead and ordered a magellan head along with a bag.

has anyone compared a magellan head directly to a markbass head? thoughts?

part of me wants to repair the markbass... it's been a hell of a rig for a long time... but perhaps it's time for an upgrade.

either way i'll post thoughts once i get it. really have my fingers crossed that i like this more than my old head. the 2.67 ohms and built in drive are a big deal for me.
