I have a question about recording through the MG800. My band is starting on our first record, and we've been experimenting with different recording techniques. For some reason, my bass signal is always causing trouble with clipping at our recording interface, even with the volume very low. Not sure if there is any way around that - I've already switched it from Mic level to Line level, which helped, but it's still a bit of a tough balance.
The weird thing that happened last night is that I had switched my EQ from post to pre, and suddenly there was a massive volume increase, which I don't really understand at all. Is it normal for pre-EQ to be way louder than post? My EQ is not set anything wacky, and certainly nothing that should affect the volume to that degree.
This is my recommendation ---- If your signal is too hot into the mixing board I would make sure that your INPUT pad is IN on the front end and use the MIC selection on the DI. If you want to use your DI in the POST position then you can also turn down the INPUT level on the front of the amp --- which you can turn your signal all the way off with that setting since that position is also post GAIN control on the front end. Also, I would think that there should be a way to pad your signal into the recording console.
Are you running your EQ up on your bass preamp up at all?
One general thought is that you might want to run your bass as flat as possible and let the recording engineer/mixer tailor the tone as it gets to the recording.
You also might want to run on 2 tracks, one very dry and the other more EQ'd as you like it and then blend in the recording process.
Just some additional thoughts.
