If he was considering the BA cabs - I’d go the other way around - they make any amp sound better.

the Magellan might not show it’s true potential through lessor cabs that stifle tone…

it will make them sound better for sure and it will show how easy it is to get a musical tone super quickly but some of those older cabs do hide what sounds are truly available

This weekends rig of doom.

That is such a good practice setup. That pre sounds so good. Did not realize how good till I used it with my 3 set of phones.
That makes sense; the headphone out on the MG800 is fantastic too!

I recently picked up an effects processor to use as a desktop headphone amp and just find myself preferring the sound and simplicity of my Magellan.

How does it hold up to the non-beater basses?
I gotta say it plays fantastic. Neck is killer. Not crazy about the pickups and preamp. I already ordered new Nordstrand PJ pups and 3 band pre to upgrade it. But, overall it’s a fun bass to play for under $1K.

Just to follow up in this, I got a San Dimas PJV soon after they came out. As Joey noted, the neck is sublime. I intended to use it as a backup, but after swapping out the bridge and tuners for lightweight ones and getting the bass to around 8 pounds, I’ve been using it a lot more than I expected. There have been various reports about noise issues, but the key thing is to not crank up the onboard preamp.

I don’t know for sure what the P pickup is, probably something made by Fender, but it works fine for me, and the Dimarzio Area J bridge pickup sounds good. I find that the pickups on the PJV are clearer than the Dimarzio Model PJ set on the 4 string version of the same bass.

I generally run it through the Magellan preamp, so, for now at least, I’m not too concerned about the onboard pre. The bones of the bass are solid. The rest can be tweaked.

I've been thinking of firing up my Alembic rig with the BA12-3s. How do you like it? I use an F2B along with the same Crest amp for stereo.

OTOH, everyone seems like the Magellan a lot. Got great reviews at the Boulder Theater last night with their new L'Acoustics K3 rig.
