Genzler Amplification Club

I've been thinking of firing up my Alembic rig with the BA12-3s. How do you like it? I use an F2B along with the same Crest amp for stereo.

OTOH, everyone seems like the Magellan a lot. Got great reviews at the Boulder Theater last night with their new L'Acoustics K3 rig.

Honestly that Alembic has come out with me for every gig since I got it in 2000…that warm fatness is something I’ve been spoiled by. Even with all the signal processing and effects in front of it, the Alembic is always there at the end. I do wish it had more EQ - I use a parametric and graphic on my board for the added flexibility. It seems to pair really well with my BA-12s. All the warm tubes character comes through wonderfully and the BAs can happily handle the big lows. Don’t know if you can see it in the pics but I have a Re/Q in the chain and I keep the filters engaged to clean up the lows.

I've been using my Genzler Magellan Preamp pedal into the effects return of my combo amp at rehearsals and it has been such a pleasure to use. Last night, at rehearsal, I brought my Sterling by Music Man Ray35 and.....oh my. This combination was so much fun to play. I think the HPF makes a world of difference in that small boomy room.

Same rig, different bass.

I agree. If I had a choice between 1) a 3-4 band EQ (para or whatever) or 2) a hi/low pass filter I think I'd choose the latter.
If you ever have a chance to try an [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] do it. It's "just" two inpedendent tuneable hi/lo/band pass filters which you can run in series or parallel or single. Absolutely incredible which bandwidth of different sounds you get out of that thing. Someone else should produce that for a reasonable price tag.

State variable filters aren't that hard to come by. You could build one fairly easily or adapt one of the ones designed for synthesizers. The cool thing about the SF-2 that is different from a lot of them is that it allows you to blend in the direct signal with the filtered signal.

Here's an interesting looking one, that is designed a bit differently from the SF-2: Spaceman Artemis Modulated Filter Guitar Pedal 2-Pole State-Variable Design | Reverb

Back in the 80s, I built Craig Anderton's Super Tone Control (a SVF with separate high pass, low pass, and bandpass outputs) into a bass. It was pretty wild. You could crank up the resonance to the point where it would oscillate. I still have it and one of these days, I'll rewire it with better quality pots and parts.

I always thought it’s be fine to try/have an Alembic with that preamp system.

Just dropping in to say that both of my bands rehearsed this week - two different basses, two different cabs.
Used the Magellan both times and it sounded great!

I've never liked contour controls, but this one is SUPER useful:
I start with the EQ flat, then ask myself "does this sound need smile-EQ or frown-EQ?"

If it needs smile EQ (raised bass & treble, scooped mids) I select Contour A and dial it to the basic sound.
If it needs more mids and less emphasis on the highs & lows, I select Contour B.

I only rely on the EQ for fine tuning.

@Jamvan I know you have multiple Genzler cab setups. Got a chance today to try the 210-3 with the 15-3 I have. The addition of the 210-3, what a nice addition. That setup just slays! Loved my bass with that setup.

That combination is such a great setup. It makes me smile every time I’m playing through it…which will be a lot very soon as I just played my last “indoor” show last night with the NC-212T and it’s time to switch back over to the BA rig for the summer.

I have a question for the Genzler users, I think I’m at the right place?
There’s a 210-3 on the Classifieds section that I’m considering, the specs says the frequency response goes down to 45Hz, and I wonder how it would work with the low-B of a 5 string bass? It would be used mainly for practice at (relatively) low volume, so I don’t need to move a lot of air.
Or would a 112 be better for my purpose?

Depends on your tonal goals - the truth is we hear the harmonic tones much more clearly than the fundamentals. The 210 does come across a little more mid forward. Both the 12 and the 210 are great - some prefer one and some the other. I personally like the 12 but the 210 is a little louder and probably cuts through the mix easier. The 12 does have more bottom.

To me if you’re going to have only one cab, I think 12’s are great. My 12 is even an MG, not a BA. Either a 112 or a 212. I think if you’re going to have multiples and a bigger rig, 10’s and 15’s. But what do I know. Some people play with just a single 15 (or 2) and say they get plenty of all the frequency range.

If I were playing big rooms, outdoors or where I don’t have good FOH support, I’d probably have a BA15 and a BA210 to go on top.

So I’ve have the 2x 15 Arrays for awhile. With a Spector Euro as my bass. It’s been great for my first learning how to play in bigger houses an just diff rooms it was great to set an go. Now as I grow I am finding my what I kinda want in spots an wonder what you all think, I wonder if I should add the DI pedal Eq to help just sculpt more the tone I want? Or possible trade both cabs for a 4x10 or possible one for a 2x10 or something.

im loving the BOOM I get an the second channel with the contour setting with first channel still tames my really hot Spector. I’m in a jam band that really crosses all types of genres funk, rock, I mean we will go anywhere. So I’m leaning toward that Jamerson tone all that slightl Grindy an cutting but still get that new age boom these newer rigs offer. All opinions are appreciated! I do run a darkglass hyper luminal pedal> a MXR envelope. Not many pedals.
