Got it. That is about how I was carrying them up steps, too. Just not as convenient as side-mounted handles, IME/IMHO. And yes, strap handles on bigger/heavier cabs can be a pain, but I normally prefer recessed dish handles on the side of an enclosure, like on the new 2x12.
Yes, we chose the side recessed handles for the MG-212T just for the reasons you've been discussing. While at GB we pioneered the use of the Edge-lift handle on the top/sides of bass cabs, the taller the cab the less practical they become.
The side mounted handles also benefit when you can get a buddy to help carry one side.....at 1 or 2AM that's when you know who your friends are.
