Genzler Magellan Pre... looks tasty

Yes, on the simpler pedals there's just an in and out jack so the multiple signal routing paths are not there and we were able to reverse them.

On the Pre-DI, there's MUCH more going on internally so the left to right signal flow matching the feature architecture makes much more sense. This applies to both the jacks and the controls working together with the signal path rather than against it. As the gain increases, and the number of amplification stages increases, the opportunities for noise and cross talk multiply exponentially. This is why ALL consoles and channel strips follow this format... for performance. This is a very quiet pedal compared with the average pedal.

Since these are top mount jacks, it doesn't really matter from a wiring perspective as it does with side mount jacks (which I do not care for, especially when there are more than 2 jacks).
While this is a great pedal this answer doesn't make much sense to me. You mean this pedal couldn't be designed with the same input/output jacks of normal pedals. This is not a console it's pedal and yes it does make it a bit inconvenient as it's the only pedal on the board wired that way. Granted I'm still getting it just a pet peave that's all.;)

We hear your concern about the jack layout. But with our preamp/DI pedal, the lowest noise level possible was our most important goal. Trying to send internal signals back and forth across a compact PCB design would increase the potential for noise, cross-talk, etc.
We feel we've delivered an extremely useful tool based upon our Magellan pre designs and one of the absolute quietest pedals available.

@biobass i have a simple explanation for why the DI on the Shuttle may not work when using the effects return. If the routing switch is in the pre position the signal is also pre effects return.

I will need to verify that the DI is post effects return, it’s been a while since I looked at that.
 
I loved my initial playing of the pre with bass, but then I tried something else. I have a Leslie 205 that was modified for 1/4" in with all channels tied together. It's always been "fine" with whatever preamp I put in front. On a whim, I tried the Magellan pre and plugged in a guitar. Holy crap! It's been a few weeks and I haven't turned on any of my usual amps, I just want to play through the Magellan/Leslie.

Contour A around noon, hpf at 80Hz, healthy boosts in the upper mids and treble. The 205 has a 15" and four 6x9s in a strange configuration. The Magellan scoops, cuts, and boosts exactly where needed to make this thing work. Loving it with guitars and basses.

I just looked at my Shuttle to verify that the DI was set to pre EQ. Does that mean I should put it in the post EQ position when using the effects receive? Perhaps the simplest solution is to use the DI from the Magellan-PRE/DI-pedal. That way, the Shuttle DI is always in the pre EQ position, which is how I normally send the DI signal to the board.

I just looked and the DI is post-return so you will get the signal with the Shuttle's DI switch in post mode.

You can do exactly the same using the Magellan's DI out however so that may be an easier way to go, you can also switch this pre-post Magellan eq.

@agedhorse , could you, please help me undertand better the type of sound it has?
I own the streamliner with 2focus 1*12 and looove how it sounds. But now, i have the chance to go to a new band, and they play with IEM, ampless rig on stage. Based on this, the preamp box could be an option (since I dont risk and go with the streamliner and use it as a simple post DI).

@VrumVrum , many players have felt the Magallan bass amp was a nice cross between the Streamliner and Shuttle amp designs. So to your question, I think the MG-PRE-PEDAL will feel very familiar to you and with the adjustable Contour circuits you should find that tone and feel, similar to what you enjoy with the Streamliner. Many have called the Magellan bass amp the Extreme-liner. Ha.
 
I have to get one, their 4OTF is excellent. Great to see a new DI without a cab sim!

I wonder if a cab sim is really needed with this pedal. By that, I mean if the HPF combined with the "old school" dial are good enough to remove excessive lows and highs for a good direct sound to the house speakers. I'm somebody who things cab sims tend to sound weird and tend to prefer other ways of achieving a similar result, but it could be i'm just behind the times.

I'm really anxious to get one. I would agree with the cab sim assessment, but it really comes down to the quality of the IR, as I've experienced, it makes a world of difference. I'm sure pretty much can be achieved with the hpf of this pedal...

In my experience with this thing, no, a cab sim is not needed. It sounds really, really good through FOH, and in my IEM’s.

I have not used the IR and never used a cab sim before so I can not speak to that. But I can tell you the pedal is extremely well made and has more than enough useable tones. I've had it 2 or 3 weeks now it's just like the Genzler/Genz-Benz amps enhances your tone doesn't color it.
 
I just got back from a vacation (Oaxaca, Mexico - wonderful people, food, sights, music - highly recommended!) and had a chance to play around with the Genzler Pre some more. This was at home, strictly living room volume, but this time I used the Pre in front of my older Hartke Kickback 12 (KB), 120 watt version with a paper cone speaker.

I have used the KB for many, many years in theater pits and for lower volume gigs of all sorts. While I prefer my Shuttle 6.0 or NeoPak into my Bergs, the KB is a pretty good and useful tool. I set the amp to my normal default settings: bass, 2:00; mid, 12:00; treble, 10:00; Shape (mid-cut), about 350 hz. I gain matched the Pre so that it was close to unity with the volume of the bass plugged directly into the front of the KB. I, once again, was using my Roscoe Beck V with TI Jazz Rounds.

I played around with the eq settings on the Pre and ended pretty much with the settings I had reported in my previous post: bass, 1:00; mid 2:00; mid frequency, 2:00; treble, 12:00. I then adjusted the Contour channels.

I noodled around for a couple of hours playing various grooves, walking bass, melodic arrangements, and the Bouree I and II from Cello Suite 3 and the Prelude from 1, both at pitch and an octave lower. I found myself gravitating more towards Contour B set between 9:00 - 12:00, although Contour A also sounded good.

Once again, I found the Pre to add a certain je ne sais quoi. Hard to describe precisely, but it is an added presence and musicality, a forwardness, with authority and fullness. Since this was at low volume, I really wasn’t going for punch. There is a subtle but different feel while playing. I continue to be very impressed with the Pre.

A big caveat is that I haven’t done any blinded A/B testing with the Pre. Maybe I can when my brother, who is also a bassist, comes to visit next week. I’ll see if I can rig something with my Radial AB or Morley ABY pedals for fast switching between using the Pre and not to see if I can reliably and consistently tell the difference in a blinded test.

I would love to understand, in general terms without compromising proprietary information, what aspects of preamp design contribute most to this. I find that some preamps and amps have this and some don’t. An example of an amp that did, in my experience, was the old Epifani UL901. My real old Ampeg SB-12 also had it as well (an open and airy quality, but not “heft” or “weight”), but only at low volume, my Ampeg B-15S, not quite (though it had “heft”) My old Yamaha B100-III with dual full parametric controls, while sounding good, did not. As much as I love my Shuttle 6.0 and NeoPak 3.5 - they aren’t going anywhere - the Genzler Pre adds to them to bring out these qualities even more.

The words “authority,” “heft,” “airy,” “open,” “presence,” “musicality,” “fullness,” “weight.” “oomph,” etc. are really hard to define and are subjective, but to paraphrase Justice Potter Stewart, I know it when I hear it, or at least think that I do (see above comment about need to do blinded tests).

How does it do that? Inquiring minds want to know. Is it mostly the shape of the equalization curves? But if that is the case, why does the Pre still have some of this when set flat and the Contours off? Why can’t I recreate it with other preamps, say my Fishman Pro Platinum with 5 bands of graphic eq? My Sansamp BDDI and VT Bass can add fullness and punch, but there is a “compressed” sound and lack of openness seemingly always there. Are there differences in op amp responsiveness? Again, respecting intellectual property, are there general answers to these questions understandable to an educated lay person? My graduate degrees, training and career were in biochemistry and molecular biology, not electronics.

I agree with a previous post... I would really like to see more reviews and hear some samples. I'm totally leaning towards this preamp, but would like to be able to know what I'm getting. Nate Navarro could plug a tennis racquet into a toaster and he would still sound amazing, but it's still a pretty good video!
