Genzler Magellan Pre... looks tasty

Cab sims can be awesome especially with overdriven tones but they can also ruin your tone when ran into a amp and/or cab with baked in hpf/lpf that already has it's own rolloff and frequency curve when combined with a cab sim or impulse responses it just stacks on top so it can cut or boost too much frequency.
Yeah I'm finding that out as I use various sims, they always seem to come to life with overdriven tones. Even a little bit helps. For clean tones that cut through the mix, not so much. I'm sure this technology was primarily aimed at those that ran DI to foh but had also I big draw for us bedroom players. That doesn't translate to the real world at least for me because I've never played a gig big enough for foh support. Alot of the is just the result of GAS plus I have fun chatting with all you guys

I find it translated perfect at big medium small shows, in the studio and just jamming/ rehearsing. keeps the grit from sounding like a swarm of bees. My iem mix sounds every bit as good as on my bands recordings now and same for foh. I couldn't say the same when I ran my ampeg svt4 and 8x10 setup not that it was bad but the preamp di setup I use now is consistently awesome and being able to hear yourself clearly makes all the difference.
 
Aux in on a pedal like this is generally going to be used to play along to tracks with, therefore this signal blends with the bass signal path right at the master volume amp stage. This feeds the headphone and main outputs. The primary reason the aux signal does not go to either the pre or post DI output is that if you want to use this for recording, playing a bass track along to already recorded other instrumentation tracks, you can still use the DI outs to send the bass only signal (without the already recorded tracks) to the recording system.
With the technology behind cab sims evolving at a blistering pace, we thought that the choice between what cabinet sim type should be left up to the player. IR's, DSP models or analog models all have their place, and different players will choose different solutions based on their need and comfort with technology. For example, a cab sim that needs to be constantly updated with software and firmware may be no big deal for some players yet be a complete non-starter for others. There have been lots of examples of IR and DSP based solutions being "quirky", maybe 5 years from now those issue might disappear (or, they might get a whole lot worse), nobody really knows for sure.
I understand the reasoning behind it, and it makes perfect sense on my Genzler amp. However, at least for me, the calculus for a pedal is a little different. When I bought my preamp pedal, one of the requirements was that it had an effects loop to insert a cab sim (or other pedal) between the preamp and DI.

I have done a fair amount of cab sim analog modeling, it goes hand in hand with designing speakers once you go from an acoustic domain model to an electrical filter domain model. All the equations are more or less the same, just that the variables in the electrical domain are more familiar to me. Would there be any interest in an analog sim with user control over the variables... things like F3, F10, damping (or Q), HPF, LPF, excursion THD?
I don’t feel qualified to comment on what parameters I’d like to be able to tweak, but I’m definitely interested in the concept. It’s less about analog or digital for me, and more about seeing how you would address simulation from a speaker designer’s perspective.

The effects loop would insert the cab sim to both outputs.

A cab sim will generally have a DI (XLR balanced out) on it, so routing the preamp signal through the sim would give you both outputs.

When I was looking at preamps, I didn’t find a DI to be that standard, but it has been a few years, so things may have changed. I also never ended up using a cab sim, and the HPF I did use doesn’t have a DI.

Like I said before, I understand the choice, but it’s a dealbreaker for me. Since I’m not in the market for a preamp, it’s not exactly a lost sale. It does save me from the temptation of buying one as a simpler alternative to my HX stomp, so it’s probably for the best. :)

That’s ok, it’s not the right solution for your needs.
 
QQ: when this should be available in Europe? I need to move some gear to make the room in my board(no namedropping :) )
Our EU distributor has them now. You could contact Thomann and they could get them on order for you. Those wheels are in motion.
Or in the UK, Bass Direct has some.

This looks very interesting. I have been happily using my Genz Shuttle 6.0 and NeoPak 3.5 for more than 15 years. Would the Magellan preamp running into the auxiliary input or the effects receive input of either of my Genz amps basically give me most of the sound and feel of the Magellan? In other words, how much of the Magellan sound and feel come from the preamp vs the power amp?

I haven’t felt the need to add a new amp to my lineup, but if I were, it would likely be a Magellan or Mesa WD-800. It would be pretty cool to have the ability to get most of the Magellan while still having the Genz sound, which works so well for me, available as well.

What would be the “best” way of setting the input gain, given that there doesn’t appear to be an input clip light? Is it just trial and error - set the input gain, then let your ear be the judge?

Most of the amps that I have with input gain controls have had input clip indicators (and tube preamps). The exception is a Crate TXB50 battery operated amp that has an input gain, but quite frankly, although the amp has its uses, the sound is only mediocre at best and I have never really heard much of a tonal difference by varying the input gain.
