Blues Monday brings an interesting story about the first blues recording, or so they claim. These sort of statements are usually dubious. It was recorded on August 10 1920, a Tuesday. They must have practiced on Blues Monday.

Early rock and country, Elvis, Buddy, Carl, Fats, Jerry Lee, Little Richard stemmed from poor gospel churches. Elvis would sit outside black churches and listen, he later recorded gospel.
Genesis art progressive was composed of rich kids. Paul Simon once commented, when he and Artie started out they sounded like arts school graduates. That’s all they knew.

Maybe they practiced on Stormy Monday, and then recorded it on Tuesday because it was just as bad.

I’ll bet that musicians back then didn’t make anything out of doing that recording. The song was inducted into the Grammy hall of fame in 1994.
At least when they played a vaudeville show, they had some cash in hand. Mamie Smith died penniless in NYC in 1946 at 55 years of age. The life of a musician in those days.

For a moment there I thought you were talking about cargo shorts. And wondered briefly which circle of musician's hell is reserved for women who wear cargo skirts on stage. What I do know as a Snapple fact is the booking agency billed the widows of the members of Titanic's band for their uniforms.
What Did Vaudeville Performers Earn?
It’s interesting to note that in 1928 vaudeville theatres closed and the buildings were converted to present movies. Joseph P Kennedy Sr. acquired controlling interest of Keith-Albee-Orphum, the biggest string of 700 vaudeville theatres and circuit operations in the US and Canada, and then flipped the company a few months later to RKO motion pictures. Vaudeville died.

Yes, the lucky ones went into movies and eventually TV. Many black performers lost their way of life. The vast booking network had allowed them to travel to different cities all over North America to work. Circuits continued but they were much smaller. Demand for that sort of live entertainment waned as movies too over.
Not the first time that corporate reorganizations destroyed lives.
