Yes it is a ritual to play a record properly. There were even "gentler" aftermarket record sleeves to replace the paper sleeves. Very annoying to have a record with a missing inner paper sleeve. IIRC some of the inner sleeves had artwork.
One bookmark I have points me to a jeweler who makes searrings of 45 rpm record inserts in sterling. At about $75, last I looked, not at the top of my list but still
on my list.
