You can blend, switch in the middle and use the volume controls. I tend to use either the neck pickup or the bridge, very rarely both. Some Gretsch instruments have a master volume which is handy.

Some cats are willing to help with the wiring. Getting the cat into the body through the sound hole is a problem.
I too, am not a fan of doing wiring jobs on most hollowbodies, trying to fish things in and out of f-holes and pickup openings. That was one (of many) great things about my old 4005WB; nice big cavity opening under the pickguard.
For someone experienced...
...not too hard. My guess is a simple rewiring of one or two pots will make the volume controls work independently of each other.

These are the bass electronics I find amusing
of course a handy Wall of Sound don't hurt
but back on this planet most of the sound I usually have in mind comes from the neck pickup. I really should replace the toggle.

If you are mostly interested in using the neck pickup, perhaps drop a TV Jones in that position and temporarily put a simple VT or, even, just a V harness in the bass (by someone with experience - we're looking at you, Jimi) to see hear how you two get along?

Sure is a lot of talk round these parts of TV Jones.
By chance accepted a bit of work I don't often agree to do. Were I to book three more, that would put me into the pair of pickups, the cost of the job and well on the way to another cab. The opportunity presented itself ... my friend who happened by with the offer wants me to go to some women's luncheon on Saturday. It could mean more work my way and won't say no.

The first mod I do with an instrument that has a floating pickguard, like the Gretsch bass has, is remove it. I think that they look way better without them.

Absatively. I liked that mine came without the floating pickguard.
His business took off when Gretsch was restarted by Fred Jr. and everything was made in Japan. TV Jones offered US made vintage Gretsch copies that sounded like the originals. Eventually Gretsch was bought by Fender and, due to their popularity, they even used TV Jones pickups in some models.

I arrived pre-convinced. The Artec pickups on mine are made to look (something like) Filter'Trons. AFIK they are made to sound like Filter'Trons. They may even sound close to the real deal. What I know empirically is the bass draws compliments. Working on that but where I draw compliments (for my playing).

Learned this years ago from my guitar repair guru - an ultimately simple solution. Tie a string to each potentiometer. Do what needs doing to the wiring, then pull the pots back into place with the strings. 
Yeah. Put the pickguard back on.

I met TV Jones, back in, what , the 90s. I got to play a mint green baritone guitar he had put together and built pickups for. I think he was trying get the local music store to take a look at it. Uptown Whittier Music in Whittier, CA, USA. Maybe that's not the exact name.
Got to visit his nearby shop, which was kind of an extension built onto the side of an old house. We chatted for a bit but mostly I just hung out and watched him work on some pickups.
That was about the time he was getting some good press on his stuff.
Seems to me he moved awhile later. Never saw him again. Did read more about his pickups over the years as he got more well known.

I just finished watching this (long) series of videos on an organ we used to go hear in the late '80s and into 1990, before we left L.A.
It gets a bit technical at times, but you learn everything about this amazing instrument.
We've heard folks like Michael Murray, Simon Preston and Jean Guillou perform on it.
