I owned a Japanese piece of crap at that time and the Silvertone was so much better than mine I couldn't believe it. My first sentence was about Nancy.
And on Friday the 13th 1312 King Phillipe of France had every Knights Templar arrested, imprisoned, and executed including the Grand Master Jaques DeMolay hence one of the explanations of why Friday the 13th is bad luck.
How did he know that?

Those Japanese instruments go for a lot of money today. One problem is, they were never set up so didn't normally play well. I had a couple back then, Silvertone were much more expensive.
I heard of DeMorlay when I was a kid but I couldn't find their club house. I was a boy scout and went to sea cadets. They had badges as well. Paramilitary organizations that prepared kids to enter future wars.

Speaking of the Middle Ages, a friend stopped by a few months ago. He's into the renaissance fair thing now. He said he would have loved to live in those days.
I told him it would probably be pretty cool until he got an abscessed tooth.
All of this talk about the Middle Ages triggered the memory of a "documentary" I saw a long time ago.

Mine was called "Audition" which didn't bode well for quality. It was set up really bad though, maybe a Teisco? What I remember of it was that it had a thick neck and the strings were a mile off the fretboard. It was a sun burst solid body, I don't remember what happened to it.

Yes! He does have a music tie. His name was Nipper. That little dog was on more records than they can count. Label around the world used to logo. In 1931, RCA helped form EMI in England and they controlled the trademark in that country. EMI was the Beatles record company which is why I adopted the avatar.

Going back to my, very young days at the time, the only important factors for a bass were things like the knobs working, sound actually went from the bass to the amp and keeping in tune. Tuning was the only thing I had to learn. A "Set Up" was an unknown to me, except as it would apply in a social situation!
I wasted a lot of hard earned money back then. I bought and sold an Eko (new) and a Hofner (used) because certain notes on the fretboard were "dead". Looking back, they could have been fixed by a set up or repair. The Fender Bassman that I bought used sounded terrible so I sold it at a loss. Looking back, it probably just needed new speaker(s).
Long story short, I was young and just wanted to play. That's why I consider myself as a dinosaur with a bit of education, thanks to all of you at TB.
Teisco made a lot of instruments under different names. Their products weren't that bad. Hagstrom in Sweden made excellent instruments but they costed more. One I had was a Raven. To this day you see them listed for sale so there must have been a lot.
I was in love with Hagstroms when I was a kid, a friend had a red one with the vinyl covering, it played really nice and was the coolest thing going to me. I've even eyed their vinyl basses on ebay a few times lately but I have too many already. I'm sure the Audition could have been set up, i had two left thumbs when I was a kid and used to destroy or make worse just about anything I tried to fix so I can't remember ever trying to set that thing up.
