On a related note, my mom finally had to leave her condo on March 10th, and move into a nursing home. She's still pleasant to talk to, but advancing dementia was making it too unsafe for her to live alone.
She was not happy about her new surroundings, and didn't have much good to say about the place, the food, or the people.
With that in mind, I was amazed at the way she perked up after they announced all the restrictions because of COVID. I figured that being stuck in her room would just make her more antsy, but it has been the opposite.
I finally realized why during a phone call this weekend. She went through the Blitz in London during the war, and has memories of rationing, sleeping around a brazier in the subway station during air-raids, etc.
People of that generation have an awareness that we tend to lack: The only way for society to survive during a crisis, is to pull together and make the best of things.
This is a very hard thing all around. It isn't unusual that family go kicking and screaming into care facilities. I went through that with my mom and others. It takes time for them to accept that they need to be there, adjust to the routine, and become more cooperative. They often don't want strangers intruding in their life. It puts a strain on the whole family.

It wasn't helped any by the call I got on Saturday. My mom had a stomach upset earlier in the week that only lasted for a day, but the test came back positive for COVID.
It helps that the doctor advised us that people who experience it as a digestive irritant tend to be the mildest cases, and my mom is confident that she'll be fine. She's also in amazing physical shape for 95, but I have to admit that I pretty much lost my poopie at the news. All we can do is wait and pray- supposedly peak symptoms usually come around the fifth to seventh day, if they come at all.
I wish you and your family all the best and pray for the right outcome.

Fever, and a splitting headache. Looks like she's in for a rougher haul than I had hoped for. Thankfully, her mood is good- she's very focused on how thankful she is for the care she's been given.
Unfortunately, I'm not managing my emotions nearly as well. It's at times like this that I wish I drank, or something.
Oh, wait, I love to over-eat. Excuse me while I slip out to Dairy Queen!

Liquor stores are closed and boarded up in some places.
This appeared me me a proper libation last night.
Oh yeah that's orange Halloween ink there next to the inkpot. Witch and haunted house and all. It's just not that often one needs to write with orange ink. Blue or black only for all formal documents. Robert Anton Wilson suggested in one of his books that everyone write "for sexual favours" in the memo field of cheques. Here in the future we hardly ever make analog transactions.

Steve, it's a very tough situation made worse by the isolation requirements. It was positively gut wrenching for my siblings and I some years ago to see our once strong, vibrant, independent mother reduced to needing 24 hour care. After she seemed to will herself into organ failure we played the self recriminations of "what if" for a time. But, fortunately, we finally came together knowing we all did all we could.
Sounds like your mom is keeping a very dignified attitude in a very undignified situation. Would that we should all be so lucky. Peace to you, sir.

And very much able to feel what one goes through, Steve, having been in a similar place. I swear, the ordeal of seeing my mother properly cared for took years off my life.
Booze stores are considered an essential service so they are open around here. The government wants the tax revenue, also there’s the issue of not leaving alcoholics unsupplied and have another crisis on their hands to deal with as they dry out.
Some smaller distilleries have shifted to hand sanitizer production.
People seem to have shifted to home delivery of groceries in a big way. You order with an app, they deliver. They advertise no shortages this way, also people don’t want to risk standing in line any more. One place has an option, “send me groceries for a week”. The store picks what to send you. You wouldn’t think it to be the case but this option has proven to be quite popular. People are lazy. On the other hand, I’m very picky about which broccoli or any other item is chosen. Freshness is important. It has to be the right one. A dented tin won’t do.
A couple of months ago deliveries were handled by an uber type company, people with cars. One big store now has fleets of big spanking new mercedes commercial vans with full time staff. Clearly they don’t see this form of delivery going away. I saw one truck on the street at 6:30 this morning delivering to an appartment building, it was packed to the gills. It’s interesting to see how fast stores are adapting to their new business model.

I would like to know if that one big store serves Northern California. I am ordering groceries to be delivered or picked up in the parking lot. I have to wait 10 to 14 days for either option. We have two Safeways within two miles of us. One has at least three or four delivery vehicles. Neither one of them offers delivery or drive up. I have to drive 4 miles to another Safeway for pick up orders only to suffer shortages and substitutions. My last order charged for two loaves of bread but they only delivered one. I lodged a complaint on line over a week ago and have heard nothing. Welcome to the new normal.

Usually if I am/was in one, it's because we are/were playing there.
It's well established that even high end restaurants serve pre-prepared food and heat it in a micro-wave ovens.
