Fortunately, as a wee tike in elementary school, we did field trips to Severance Hall to see/hear George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra on a fairly regular basis.

Wife Abi grew up in Maple Heights, class of 66, has great memories of Severance Hall!

If she (and you) have not been there since before the turn of the last century, when you can go see a concert there. They did an amazing major renovation to the place and it is like it was when first built, truly a glorious venue.

In 1977 I had a 'personal luxury coupe', a 1972 Oldsmobile Toronado, it was a beautiful car but it never met a gas station it didn't like. 455 4 barrel motor. Not mine of course but same color. I love those old boats and still have a 94 Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon (Road monster) to haul my equipment in, I had it all mechanically restored a few years ago and I do most of my driving in it. It's actually not as bad on gas as you would think, it's got a Corvette LT-1 350 in it but can get 20 mpg on the highway and it's pretty fast for a boat, around town I still get 16-17 mpg. The Toronado got about 6-10. I had a 1977 VW Rabbit at one time, those things were weird they burned oil when new and it was written on the gas cap (under the little door) to check your oil every two tank fulls.

Only in America did we endeavor to build cars with sufficient square footage that, when parked in your driveway, they technically qualified as an addition to your house, for insurance purposes.

Did your Toronado have the push button auto trans?
I believe Olds discontinued it in '70, but there have been later models that escaped the factory with a shift method that "didn't exist", on paper.

No, it had the steering column shifter, I did have a 62 Dodge Dart with the push button automatic in it, it came with a 318 in it, they were voted one of the ugliest cars ever built I believe.

Speaking of "cars with sufficient square footage that, when parked in your driveway, they technically qualified as an addition to your house" a drummer I used to play with had a 1972 Cadillac, the trunk was so large he could throw the whole drum set in it, I think he had to take the cymbals off IIRC. I miss the days when you could tell what kind of car it was with one look.

A friend of mine who is now a retired GM exec told me that it was viewed as the single biggest mistake in GM history.

But, there is more to the story...

The Chevy Equinox exists solely because of the Aztec. GM invested $1.2B in the development of the Aztec chassis. They had to use the chassis for something else. Otherwise, GM would have had to write off the entire $1.2B. The first Equinox was built on top of an Aztec chassis.

Did Paul Harvey tell you that? Yup those have to be the ugliest cars ever made, Pacers were pretty ugly too though. I had another drummer friend who had a restored one (why?) and it got laughed at everywhere he went.

The reason it was ugly was that it was designed by a committee of potential customers. Pontiac thought that if they gave people exactly what they asked for, it would be successful.
