Friday On My Mind

The Tages were a Swedish rock/psychedelic/folk band formed in the early sixties in Gothenburg. They were very popular locally, kids in Sweden wanted local bands. They soon got Abba. The Tages broke up in the late 60's after recording their last album at Abbey Road Studios in London. Perhaps they were just a bit too experimental wanting to break new ground like the Beatles did with Pepper. It's amazing how many bands took a shot at making records and faded into distant memories.

The bass player, Göran Lagerberg, was the primary writer for the band. He is still active as a songwriter, working in film, is a studio musician, and has played in various bands.

That version even though almost a carbon copy of the original is very good.

My younger sister had a 45 of "Sugar, Sugar" and played it incessantly. Anytime an earworm discussion came up in later years I'd always sing the opening to it and people would cover their ears and yell "Noooo, STOP!" Thus I continue to avenge myself for those hundreds of times I heard it in the house while growing up. (Is there not a wicked evil grin emoji available here?)

My younger sisters used to play this stuff all the time and drive me nuts, I actually don't mind it now compared the ummmm.. crap that's out now. Hey little woman is pretty good actually.

The closest many got to classical music was 101 Strings. Well that and Zorba the Greek.

Fortunately, as a wee tike in elementary school, we did field trips to Severance Hall to see/hear George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra on a fairly regular basis.

My Father had a plethora of classical music all on 12" 78 RPM recordings. I think I wore Tannhäuser out. LOL

Want some more? Come on down! The SO's father had a whole slew of them that we have "inherited". Even, all your favorite 101 Strings, and other fine, easy listening "classical" music, on 78s and LPs, too.

I had a record of an early Raiders live performance. They did covers of hard rocking songs as well as their own material. They could really play, very different than their albums.

(I preferred the Ventures) The black and white TV back then was OK but wasn't connected to the stereo to make a better sound. That came much later...

Night at the Pops draws a lot more people than a night of Mahler.

Mahler's tolerable to me in reasonable doses, but every time I see his name I think of Tom Lehrer's "Alma."

Oh, yeah, that stuff was playing in my parents house all the time on the old black Motorola radio during the 50's. Another one I remember well is Volare. I can still remember my mother walking around singing Frank sinatra tunes.

I think some of my earliest memories are of Frank Sinatra singing on the little 45 player that (I learned later) my Dad got my mother for her birthday. There was always music in the house. Good memory.

I can still remember my mother singing "Love and Marriage" by Frank Sinatra, the first time i watched "Married With Children" I couldn't believe it had the the same theme song.
