When we saw Renaissance a couple years ago, Annie Haslam told us (the whole audience) a true story about her "moment in the light"!

I was so happy when the nearby universities announced only online classes this fall, exceptions are medicine and dentistry. Last winter when covid hit, all the students went home. I can't tell you how nice it was.

Well, it turns out that the students are all back. They want to experience school life, so we should all suffer for their benefit. The universities are streaming the courses, there are some limited organized activities. The only difference is now they just remotely attend class. With all the extra free time, they are having more off campus parties, are out screaming on the streets till after 4AM, and a making general nucences of themselves. The law says, wear a mask in buildings, malls, busses, etc. or face large fines. Many don't, there isn't any enforcement that I can see.

IT'S WAY WORSE THAN IT USED TO BE!!!!!!

A couple months ago there was a sizable party in the parking lot right behind our back yard. No one was wearing masks, so I call the "authorities" (?), they literally said, "What do you want us to do about it?"

Just wait until you retire, then, all days are Fridays, or Thursdays, or whatever day you want it to be.

There is a great deal to be said for actual contact with other people in whatever bodies they inhabit, especially as part of an education. And insofar as I've ever seen, music is best played with others. (of a like mind, there's a trick there.)

Certainly I know people who are crowd intolerant the way some are gluten intolerant. In the day, the Los Angeles Street Scene was maybe the only place in the entire city where it was possible to actually intermingle closely with other Los Angelinos. My private belief, held in reserve until now, is the troubles that came to be associated with the Street Scene came from much higher up than we were lead to believe. There were scrappy newspapermen around, but knowing where to find their work was a bit of a knack.

Kids need to enjoy school but things have really changed.

Folks in the neighbourhood hate the students. They are spoiled children who are on their own for the first time. They go nuts with excess and have zero respect for everyone else. When an incident occurs, their parents show up with lawyers.

Even a cop moved out because he couldn’t take it anymore and couldn’t do anything about it. The cops regularly show up to quell disturbances, he sympathizes. The schools have their own patrols to try to deal with the students.

The area didn’t used to be like this.

I have some work colleagues who on the busier weeks like to remind me that I'm lucky that I'm still good at my job, because I totally suck at retirement. After formally retiring from my first career, I had planned to work in a consulting capacity part-time for a year or so and ease into real retirement. Fast forward to twelve years later and all I seem to do is keep saying I'm just in this for another year or two and then I'm really done this time...like for sure...no really I'm not kidding...

On the flip side, I know there will come a day when the phone isn't ringing anymore. So I figure while it still is, I should probably answer it and be grateful for the paycheck. As long as I still have time for music (and I do), I figure life doesn't get much better and I know plenty of folks who would trade their situation for mine in a heartbeat.

Good for you @Al Kraft. After almost 50 years, I am happy my phone is not ringing. I need time to enjoy myself without thinking of work.

I'm closing in on 45 years in essentially the same profession. While it's been rewarding, I'm truly looking forward to turning over the watch to my relief at some point. I had virtually no transition/downtime at all between act 1 and act 2 of my professional life. It's hard to imagine what it'll feel like to wake up one morning and have my day driven by the priorities of my own making/choosing.
