I would not have boarded that ship. The trip was smack dab in the middle of March Madness. No way I could do that.

A few years ago a jeweler told me that unless you spent more than about $300 you were getting the same movement in virtually every watch on the market. Quartz (battery) movement, that is.

I took my Gucci watch for a replacement battery to a shop where starter watches are the bottom tier of the TAG Heuer line. They told me they don't work on novelty watches.

BTW, that watchmaker has a good sense of humor. Wife's workshop, and all.
I watch him work on watches. He has a cool tuner that counts beats to set the internal timing. It’s amazing what can be brought back.
I think he’s in Ireland.

I admire a lot of you who had the sense to buy high quality stuff. I've always been kind of a cheapskate. A while back I had to replace my $19.99 Timex leather band watch. I was so upset because they had discontinued the watch and the replacement was $34.99! what I observe in my own is I tend to keep the things that are important to me. And if a something is important to me (oh, like a bass) I take care never treat it as a throwaway.
and what I observe is I like to travel light, always have, always will. I travel with sailor's duffel of life's important things

And another way to think of it (it helps for me) is there was a presence to project in the workplace. Some skinflint publisher is in deep enough doo that he's willing to foot the bill to put me on a plane to come fix whatever hellworld they're in ... When I walk in I'd better drip confidence and looking sharp is also part of looking pro. Ain't no different ... it's still rock and roll and this week I'm the pro from Dover. There's a performance aspect

especially when I've absolutely no clue how I'm going to deal with this mess
but if I don't look the part I ain't gonna get the part. If I don't behave the part I don't get to keep the part. And (hesitant to point out what I trust is obvious) I walk in at a disadvantage compared to my male associates.
Surprised I play the bass instead of vamp the mike as a lead singer and tambourine player?

As far as I know, all I have is a pocket watch that my great grandfather used as a conductor on a steam train. Now that’s being a cheapskate.

I have a Timex that was given to me for no good reason by my little brother maybe 10 years ago. I don't wear watches anymore, but that Timex, as simple and basic as it was, was nice looking and relentlessly accurate. Back when I used to referee rowing, I had a digital Timex that I got for its stopwatch function, to back up my dedicated stopwatch, and for its waterproofness. Flawless, weighed almost nothing and was on sale for under $20 at Tarzhay.
