A cool thing about you, @alaskaleftybass , is that you get to live in one of the most beautiful and wondrous places on earth. I'll probably never get to see it. You're much richer than I am.

My closest encounter with Alaska is looking at the Alaska Air planes on the tarmac

My wife and I have done two trips to Alaska. If you think that the pictures of Alaska are beautiful, you simply have to see it in person. To top it off, the people are genuinely friendly and love their state.
As a kid, I used to love the being out in the cold winter nights, gazing at the northern lights and the stars. I haven’t seen that in over fifty years. Bright city lights allow you to see only a few stars and the moon.

Thanks GOF's. But we small town bumpkins do like to get off "The Rock" a few times a year. Unfortunately we didn't this year and only once last year. Hopefully 2021 will be kinder to all of us.
When we can, we go to Salem Oregon and the kids descend on us at the Shilo Inn. We rent the rooms and the kids get to use the pool. We usually go for a week and those days are very precious times. But once we hit that runway in Sitka we are so glad to be home. I do miss Olive Garden, Sizzler Steak House, and browsing through Best Buy. Can't wait until we can do that again.

If it makes you feel better, Best Buy isn’t like it used to be. They sell a lot of products online only, they aren’t in the stores to the extent that they used to be. The owner complained that people would come there to see products, then buy them at AMAZON. So they shuttered stores and cut back what they do stock.
This is a trend with a lot of retail stores. More people shop online than ever before.

Sadly, a lot of online shoppers are shooting themselves in the foot. Just wait until there is something they now, only to realize that there are no longer any local retail establishments.
Before COVID, my first choice was to buy local as I could "try before I buy" and take advantage of the "so-called return policy". Even then, Amazon's prices were the same as retail. Problem was, Best Buy and other local stores didn't have stock, delivery times were worse than Amazon and return policies got more and more restricted.
I don't know what started this "trend" but, with COVID, Amazon is better than ever although. I still look for sales or in-stock items with locals provided they have curb-side pickup.
I won't say I never buy hardware items online, but it's rare. We're lucky in that we have a local hardware store that has survived the big-box onslaught. It started in the late 1800s as a grocery-and-hardware and became hardware-only in 1940. Owned by the same family until the last of them died a couple of years ago. Of course, I haven't been inside in almost a year now, but I was there today for them to load some mulch I'd bought over the phone into the trunk so Mrs. Tango could muck about with her plants. It's one of those good old places where you're going to get expert advice from the employees and where, after you've looked for 10 minutes without finding what you want, you ask one of them and they take you to the exact place where it's stocked on the shelf. And tell you the proper way to use it if asked. One of those places where they can't do enough for you and are genuinely glad you came in. And that's why they're thriving, I guess.
I concur. Did an Alaskan coastal cruise 3 years ago and it was amazing. Nothing like seeing it in person.

While I know how huge Alaska is and that scenes like that are possible in some places, those kind of pictures and the word Alaska just don't logically go together in my mind. Although I always do better if people explain things to me slowly and as if I was a small child or a Golden Retriever.

I know what you mean. But Golden Retrievers are a lot smarter than a child, even short ones.
Heatwaves like July 5 2019 in Alaska are outliers and the data should be disregarded when performing an analysis. After all, the military would like to continue to use Alaska as a cold weather testing site.

Very smart dogs like standard poodles mean a different set of problems than with profoundly dumb breeds like Russian wolfhounds.
And by some chance my slippers don't match and there is a dog involved in that.

I ordered replacement slippers a week ago. The auto-ack that arrived Monday confirmed the order, and included a link to track the shipment. As of Saturday the package was still awaiting pickup. An email to customer support is as yet unanswered.
